What is the name of the book where a group of people find themselves stuck in a dark hole with endless steps? They run into a machine that makes them do crazy stuff to each other to get pellets of meat? Thanks!

Could it be "House of Stairs" by William Sleator? It's a teen book but the plot is just like you describe. http://www.amazon.com/House-Stairs-William-Sleator/dp/0140345809/?tag=24680e-20 The date on amazon says it's from 1991, but I really think it came out before then -- that would just be a reprint date.
