Like welfare, government cheese..I mean healthcare, etc? Why should my wealth be distributed, and why would anyone willing to work hard, or that is smart enough to do good for themselves, be FOR taking from the working class to give to the leeches on society?

origen01 - When a program is there for the benefit of ALL - police, fire, then it is for the common good. Welfare doesn't help everyone, just those that dont' work. Social health insurance only benefits those without, to the great detriment of those that already have.

dude - Compassion I have. The willingness to work my butt off (and I've pulled myself out of a DEEP hole) to get where I am. I'm not rich, but I make it. I have 7 yr old truck that I bought new and paid off. I pay my bills, I have a few luxuries, but nothing excessive. How much can I give though, before I myself must go without?

socrates – I have made some horrible decisions for myself, and managed to get myself in a horrible position. Broke, jobless, little hope, no money, lots of bills. I worked hard, persisted, gave my all, and yes, now I am out for myself. I got 6 months of unemployment after being in the workforce for 13+ yrs. That was a pittance that covered nothing. I recognized the things I wanted and needed and worked to achieve them, all on my own. Why should I now pay for those that aren’t deserving, that just want to take and take?

I support social programs for those in dire need;not those who wish to live a better lifestyle at my expense. If you choose to have the SUV,plasma TV,cell phones, live in a great neighborhood, and find yourself coming up short when it comes to health insurance, retirement, etc, adjust your lifestyle and live within your means.
Keep your thieving hands out of my wallet.

Compassion for those who may be just as willing to work hard but not as able. Plus, since you seem to be much more interested in looking after yourself than in anyone else, I can think of at least a couple way in which paying into social service can be seen as in your self-interest. 1. Though you may always be willing to work hard you may not always be able. A car crash, stroke, heart attack, natural disaster or any one of a thousand other misfortunes might impair your employability. Are you really so much of a rugged individualist that you'd say, "Nope. Keep your social services to yourself. I'll just quietly starve to death."? 2. You might want to look into the countries that have the best, most comprehensive social services and the countries that offer little or nothing in the way of social services and compare their levels of crime, riots and general social unrest. If the rich are allowed to become too rich and the poor too poor, the inevitable result is bloody, popular revolt. The have-nots will take what they need from the haves. Finally, you might want to compare the amount of your tax dollars going to welfare scammers with the amount going to Exxon the Department of Defense and other private government contractors. Who are the fattest leeches?

Sometimes people fall on hard times.
For example a middle class family of 4, father works full time, mother works part time, 2 kids in grade school. UH OH!!! Father gets laid off or is injured on his job, has to take unemployment, or disability. Loses health care for his family. Mother is looking for a full time job, but few offer the pay or benefits to support the whole family. Family has to sell house, pay off debt and insurance bills with leftover profits, move to an apartment, collect welfare or starve.
This could happen to any one.

It's called compassion and a certain amount is required for a society to consider itself civilized. Not everyone that needs a hand is a leech. The problem is identifying those that really need help and how much to give.

Also, We consider ourselves to be a Christan, caring society and helping those less fortunate is the Christan, caring thing to do.

I see, you would rather that the "robber barons" get the money. You see your looking at this social issue as being something on the up and up and it is not. If it were, everyone would be gainfully employed, there would be peace and or children would be playing in the streets. However the so called money men wish it differently and only want the benefits for themselves while they have more money than they need. If you like the idea of "frozen classes" and the return to plantation mentality then stick with the neo cons. Don't forget though that you are on their screw you list as well.

Social programs benefit people who work too. Welfare is a tiny portion of federal budgets and it's better than letting people starve in the streets. Go see if you feel safe standing at night in downtown Mexico if you don't believe me.
Social programs are about taking those things that are made to benefit all of the people away from corporate hands, and to redirect their focus from private profit into public service. This only bothers people who are concerned about isms.

yeah, get your own protection force and fire response team and stop sucking up my hard-earned money

Social programs are necessary, the question is where do you draw the line? It all depends on the definition and extent of a social problem/need.
