Watch a movie last night ,"The Day After", and not too kicked about the way things are over there.
When will this country stop being the watch dogs & get our own house in order?

Good A-$$ question!....my sentiments exactly!!

IMO when this country raises its education standards as evidenced by kids who actually LEARN; when our populace has better health; when our poor can live decently and eat 3 squares; when prejudice/racism is wiped out; when elders are assured a comfortable 'old age' with decent and affordable health care; when a family where both parents work can afford a decent home and an education for their children..........when, when, when, when....THEN maybe we can hold outselves UP as an example that would be one other countries may wish to follow.

As I get it, the U.S. wants to build an intermediate missile system somewhere in Eastern Europe to guard against any missile attack that might be launched by Salafist Jihadists.
I can also understand the Russian's concern over such a thing. They did ratchet up the arms race after we installed Pershing missiles inside West Germany during the Cold War. But, Vladmir Putin has to recognize that the "rebels" his forces are fighting inside Chechnya and the "insurgents" we are fighting on several fronts right now are cut from the same ideological cloth. That's why I use the term "Salafist Jihadist". It is the most accurate term to describe those who follow the likes of Usama Bin Laden.
Don't expect a lot of guidance and expertise from the media and the "talking heads" on this topic. None of them speak one word of Arabic and few know the first thing about Islam or have even heard of Seyyid Qutb or Ibn Abdul Wahab Najdi. The source below is for the book written by Qutb. It's the "Mein Kampf" of the Salafist Jihadist movement. Finally translated into English, it only runs 160 pages. I recommend you pick up a copy and read it. It will make your blood run cold.

I think they'll have to run the cold war bs again. It was the fear that worked. Look at how they are trying to fill the fear void created when the cold war supposedly ended. Yellowstone blowing up, methane explosion, ufo's, meteorites, tsunami's, the list is endless.
At least with the cold war we had a single thing to be afraid of.
There's so many things to fear today I don't know how to allocate my fright time....lol

Don't forget the re-unification of Germany was to take place 45 years after WWII. This was in the treaty signed. So naturally the wall would have come down. Reagen made it look like he did it but it was going to happen anyway. Good political timing though.

No, the government lives by a totally different set of rules than the people.

I agree with Sage. There is so much that needs tending to in our own backyards. I fully understand the need to help others, really I do. I see nothing wrong with helping outher countries really in need, but the US always seems to be among the first, and the one that spends the most, yet we'r not appreciated. If something happens here, our the people trained to protect us are in other countries. Charity begins at home.

I can't wait to see Goldwing's answer.

I agree with Sage.....we started out pretty good...then got so cocky we stuck our noses where they didn't belong while our own country fell apart. Time to step back and get our own house in order before we start telling everyone else what to do. Seems we got enough on our plate. I don't blame Russia for not trusting us....heck many of us don't trust our own government.....why should they?

Sage I agree with you but that almost seems like a fantasy I 'm sorry to say. I think with our (U.S.) position in the world we need to help other counties but we need to help ourselves too. I would love to see my grandchildren's school have enough books so they can take them home to study. It is a sad state we our children are not getting an education and elderly can not get medication.
Let's hope Pres. Bush gets one right.

Helping other countries is one thing. Dominating them and telling them what to do is an entirely different kettle of fish. We have live through this before. Deja vVu anyone? It's just "talk".

I read aftenposten news this am, it is translated to English and Norway is where the paper is. They have photos of Russian fighters loaded with cruise missles flying in their space. So, who watches who??
