I personally don't like credit unions, because they have limited locations and inconvenience business hours. I bank with Washington Mutual and then worked for them for almost 7 years (just recently quit this part time job). If you keep good standings, is like TOTALLY free on both checking and savings account. But the thing is you need to have either $300 (daily balance) in savings or you need to have the auto saving set up. The auto savings is to transfer AT LEAST $25 from your checking account to your savings account MONTHLY. Otherwise there is a $3 monthly fee on savings account. The checking account is totally free (with good standing, otherwise overdraft fee just any other banks and credit union), that also includes order regular plain checks. The business hours are from 9 am to 6 pm Mon thru Fri, and ALMOST ALL branches open on Sat from 9 am to 1 pm. So I suggest Washington Mutual if there is a branch in your area.

Of course you want to find one that has NO fee and good serivce, convenience Business Hours, many locations, and 7/24 phone services.

Not sure where you live, but I used to work for Washington Mutual and I think they have pretty good checking and savings accounts for FREE, no minimum balance to maintain on Checking Accounts, and you can set up Automatic Savings Plan to waive the monthly fee on the Savings account. But the other way to waive the Savings account monthly fee is by maintaining $300 balance in the savings account. I think this is better than the Automatic Saving Plan. But if you cannot maintain the $300 minimum do the Automatic Savings Plan. The automatic savings plan is to automatically transfer money (on the date that you choose when you set it up) $25 minimum per month from checking account to savings account. Make sure you have enough money for this transfer...That is why I said is better to have that $300 minimum maintain in savings account. The branches open Mon thru Fri from 9 am to 6 pm. Sat. from 9 am to 1 pm. (Few branches are NOT open on Saturdays).

I have both of mine through Bank of America. I love their online banking site - its very easy to navigate and to keep track of your bills. I also like the Keep the Change program they started. All of the purchases that you make are rounded up to the nearest dollar and the "change" is deposited in your savings account automatically. After a year, Bank of America will match a portion of your savings. Its free money! They also have many ATMs and banking centers, so its easy to find one when you need it. I would suggest comparing the banks in your area and finding the one that works for you. Good luck!
