A salon would be a large room that get togethers were held. It was a popular term in the 1700's. The salon would be the place where say a concert was held or some type of entertainment but usually a musical event with dancing.
To sort of place a picture in your mind...think of a large room...very high ceilings...maybe 12 to 20 feet. The walls are painted usually white...tall windows from floor to ceiling and paintings and or tapestries hanging from the walls. There would or may be furniture. Perhaps some small tables or chairs..usually up against the walls as the ceneter of the room was the place where any attraction of event might be. If you look at photographs of the Palaces of Europe or even watch movies like Barry Lyndon or Amadeus...the indoor concerts were held in salons.
As far as famous people who'd attend or you'd find there? Mozart or any other composer from the 18th century. Kings, Queens, Archbishops and Bishops, and any other type of royalty or people of the Gentry class. Men of science or literature. Basically anyone who would be a popular person in those days and was invited to mingle with the upper class structure of the day.
