i am 35 weeks and am having occasional sharp pains really low down, like in my vagina, they just come suddenly and take my breath away, and then may go away for a few hours. Is this just the little one 'prodding' me down there as he is lower? Or this this my cervix beginning to dilate, or is it something I should be concerned about?

chill out people! I am not in labor geez! I said the pains are 'occasional' as in a few times a day and have been having them for about 5 days now, I think I would know if I was in labour, I am not having contractions or anything..

And also...to 'Ladycarebear' you are saying that I must not be smart for asking such a question, but I cant be that stupid, just graduated from a law degree, and you are going out with a guy who is on probation for drug possession (see past questions)....hmmmm I wonder who is the 'smarter' of the two of us!!??

I had this too...
It's probably just your body preparing for labor...because contractions as someone else mentioned here...don't happen in your vagina...they happen in your uterus...so it's unlikely that that is what they are.
I had the same extremely uncomfortable stabbing pain too when I was very far along in my pregnancy ...
In my experience....it wasn't anything to worry about...but it never hurts to ask the doctor what his take is on it.
***I read some of the other answers...and the one about pinched nerves is ringing a bell...
Good Luck, and congratulations!

This is caused by the babies position and unfortunately it usually does not go away. I had this with all my pregnancies. It is very painful and feels as if you have fallen on something sharp and have a major bruise there. The baby applies a lot of pressure on your groin area and some women suffer from this pain as you mentioned. This is usually the baby pushing on your cervix which can be extremely painful at times. Talk to your doctor about it at your next visit and see if he/she reccomends anything for it.

Hi, Sugar.
Every change that happens to a woman, especially if she's on the "family way" should be really of a concern to oneself and to her partner. Always consult your Ob-Gyne.
But let me point out that I think your situation is normal. It's just that your physical form is slightly being changed to accomodate an event that is almost surely to come...

Well you sound like you have it under control now!!! You sounded kinda confused when you asked the question!
Yep it's getting close! Your fixing to be MOMMY!!! You better focus and not panic cause it will get worse! You might go through several false alarms but what if it is not. Be prepared, but for now go see doc!

I now exactly what you mean. It really is uncomfortable. I think its the baby trapping nerves as they are getting into position to come out. Those pains are not as bad as the real labour!!

I have the same type of pains with Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. Not to say that's what you have... I think your pelvic bones are starting to widen to prepare for delivery. This sometimes causes pain in the groin.

PL. rush to the hospital. It may be labour -pain caused by impulses carried by sympathetic nerves to brain. Keep your mind free from fear & tension. the baby may be lowering.into birth canal.

i had the same thing and when i asked my midwife she said it was just the baby bouncing on a nerve. so i wouldn't be concerned just try to move baby into a new position when it happens and you'll feel much better.
