Phoenix, Arizona is the last place on earth you would want to move to, honestly, especially if you have teenagers/young children. It's a very boring place to live, there's nothing to do here except go to the movies and go to the mall (they get boring... VERY fast).
Stay away from the suburbs such as Chandler, Mesa, Queen Creek. Why? Because they're very ugly. There's piles of dirt every where because of the CONSTANT construction of cookie-cutter homes. Also, there's a very high usage of drugs amonst high schoolers then any other place in the States.
The only good thing about Phoenix is probably.. good weather during the winter? That's it.
Don't move here. It'll be a favor to your sanity.

Very different city. Phoenix is a lot more sprawling, hotter, and has less of a defined "downtown" than does Denver. The mountains are also a bit more "scattered" than the western skyline of the Rockies.
Not that there aren't some similarities - both cities have an active professional sports scene, both are western cities with dry air and a similar laid back lifestyle. And Phoenix is indeed family-friendly.
I prefer Denver, myself - I like the walkability of downtown and the more structured art and cultural scene of Denver as opposed to Phoenix, but I don't think you'd find Phoenix to be too much of a culture shock, from a "Western" standpoint. Also, Denver's a short plane flight away.

You should know that everyone else in the world is moving here also, and the population of Phoenix will be 20 million in a few years. The traffic is horrible, the crime rate very high. Every day you turn on the news and another cop has been shot. It is extremely hot in the summer. A girl from North Dakota went on a hike with her family a couple months back and dropped dead of dehydration, she thought she was fine. You need to experience the heat and everything else before you decide for sure you want to move here.

I hope you like traffic! The traffic in the Phoenix Metro SUCKS!! You have to plan everything out 3 hours in advance to go anywhere! Both my brothers lived there and moved back to the NorthEast in less than a year. My mom is still there, but comes back for the summer. She chose to work at a retail store a mile from her house to keep away from the traffic. Stay in Denver. Most neighbors are not friendly and hardly speak english. I bet most people there are illegal immigrants from mexico.

Totally different climate and way of life. Desert and mountain sports are much different although you can drive to mountains from Phoenix. Found while I was there that it was family friendly but quite frankly I preferred Denver.
