I saw this on an episode of House MD (the best medical drama show ever), two elderly people who were presumed to be married to each other, had different colored wedding rings of. It turns out that they were married to other people but they were hooking up with one another. One has gold, the other one either silver, platinum, white gold or something light. Is that true? Are married couples supposed to have matching wedding rings? I never knew this. I'd like to know before I get married & buy the wrong rings. Thanks for your answers.

It used to be traditional thing to do but I have noticed a lot of couples have "speciality rings" and not necessarily matching and then again I don't see every married couple wearing rings at all. Your choice I suppose.

No the rings do not have to match. A ring is a personal thing and it should be something that the person is comfortable wearing.
Our rings do match, both simple wide gold bands but that was the way we wanted it.
In my first marriage I had a white gold engagement ring with a matching wedding band with diamonds in it. My husbands wedding ring was yellow gold with a black onyx design all the way around it. He picked it out himself because he had always wanted a ring like it.
The rings should make the wearers happy and concentrate on the marriage itself.
Good luck.

Hmm...I'd never heard that married couples are supposed to have matching wedding bands. My husband and I do both have matching traditional yellow gold bands though. We bought them in a set, so I wasn't even really thinking about them having to match...not that it matters. My husband doesn't wear his anyway. He's too lazy to go get it resized...his ring is a 13 and he needs an 18!!! I'm gonna make him start wearing it around his neck, lol. Older people are just probably more traditional than the rest of us...that's why they thought it was curious that they had different bands.

It's completely up to the spouses. Some people enjoy matching sets, others prefer to go their own way. I even know couple who only one of the partners wears a ring. I know another couple who buys new rings every few years. There are no hard and fast rules.
Personally my husband and I have similar rings but not to match. We just have very similar tastes.
As for the show, they probably just did that to accent the affair.

There is no rule. Some couples choose matching wedding rings. Sometimes they have different tastes in rings and wear different ones. It's a personal preference. Jewelers sell wedding sets that include the engagement ring and his & hers wedding bands. Or you can buy all three rings separately based on your preferences.

It's completely up to the couple. They don't have to wear matching rings. My husband and I have identical rings - plain gold bands. I wanted this type of ring because this is the kind of wedding ring that's traditional in my native country - and my husband really didn't care what kind of ring to get, so we just got two of the same kind. He doesn't wear his anyway, as he works with electronics, and any kind of metal on your hands could be dangerous.

They do not have to match, but it is nice to at least have the same kind (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) My hubby and I do not match, but they are both platinum. My in-laws have matching bands. You get what you think looks nice. Every person has a different opinion of what they want.

I would say it just depends on what you want. If I have a different taste than my husband, I'm not going to settle for something I don't like. Haha. I don't think they HAVE to match, but I think that most do. Besides, don't the girls pick the rings out anyway? I'm sure you'd pick out the ring for your husband that complimented yours. But, I don't think there's necessarily a "rule" about it.
