One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901. Then the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the current Baltimore Orioles who were the Milwaukee Brewers in 1901), the team moved to the New York City borough of Manhattan in 1903, then becoming known as the New York Highlanders -- named beacuse their stadium site (Hilltop Park between 165th and 168th streets) occupied some of the highest land (elevation wise) in all of Manhattan. It was not until 1913 that "Yankees" name became the team's sole name. In 1923, the team moved across the Harlem River to the Bronx.

Mar. 12, 1903: The New York franchise was approved as a member of the American League. Because the site is one of the highest spots in Manhattan, the club was known as the "Highlanders" and their home field "Hilltop Park."

To Micheal M, the yanks didnt play at the polo grounds until they changed their name from highlanders to yankees, as the highlanders they played at Hilltop Park 1903-1912

The first two respondents are correct. I read someplace that they were also called the Hilltoppers. Team nicknames during this time were often in flux - Red Sox were called the Pilgrims, Boston Braves were called the Bees one year, at one point in the 19th century the Cleveland Indians were called the Spiders.
