I kind of like Dell computer base models, with upgades purchased from pricewatch.com. You can get base models at dell for absurdely cheap, especially if you need a monitor. They make up for giving away the base models by upselling service and components. If you purchase the components elsewhere, you get something new, and something cheap.

I would only by a re-furb if it was 60% or less of the cost of a new machine and if it had a full one year warranty. Unless something was actually broken the only thing they have done is clean it and re-install the OS. So, all the moving parts (hard drive, DVD drive, fans, etc) already have significant wear. Re-furbs are usually already three years old, so you'll typically find machines that were built for XP, and not Vista, and will usually have only 512mb of memory.
I have a 3 yr old laptop that I bought new and I've already changed the hard drive and the DVD drive is sketchy.
I have a 6 yr old e-Machine desktop that I bought new in 2001. I've had to change the CD drive and the hard drive is making odd noises now.
What are you going to do for the 1% of the time that you will need a computer away from home? Unless you also buy a "pocket pc" you will need a laptop.

Buy a desktop if ur planning to use it at home it is cheaper.
However if you can afford it buy a new one, it costs more but you get the warranty and after sales support for one year on parts and 2 years on the processor, I suggest you buy it in a store near your home so you can have it serviced if it bugs out. Invest on a good motherbord (asus or intel) and good RAM since by experience 70% of troubles come fom them.
That's what I always do and if you can buy lcd monitors it's 1/3 cheaper on electricity than CRT. That's what I did and i have no complaints and it's been 2-3 years since i bought my pc Pentium 4 2.4 Gigahertz with 1gb ram and 256 video card
hope it helps. I'd be buying the dual or quad core soon coz it's getting slower^^

If you aren't planning to use the pc at home 100% get a laptop. You dont want to move a desktop around all the time. I never recommend refurbished. That means someone has had a problem with it in the past and it's just been "fixed". I would go with something new.

I have a desktop for main business purpose and laptop for kids so they don't get in the way and if i need a laptop I use theirs. I also have one refurbished and one new computer both work about same quality it's just check out the dealers warranties etc before buying used. If you go in and ask to look at some of their units ask first to boot some up watch for error messages and run scan disk if they will let you.

laptops are over rated, and as far as any electronic purchase, always go with the new and here is why; say you bought a new HP for $1000, like mine was 3 years ago, I have not had to upgrade or repair anything and if something did go wrong, it was covered. saving 20% buying used does not save you money in the long run. analogy time, I wear only doc marten shoes, the cost $120 and I could easily buy tennis at $25. I have had my boots 10 years, my slip ons 8 years and they are in great shape, so thats $12 a year I spent on those shoes each, how long do your shoes last? 6 months? thats $50 a year! yes, I have been drinking, i'll read this later to see if it makes sense!

Desktop, Lenovo brand is my recommendation. I've bought 40 in the past 2 years for my business, only had one hardware issue. I do not recommend a refurbished machine. I personally would pay the extra for a new one.

You need a new desktop.Get a copy of Consumer Reports; this will help you pick one suited to your needs.
Go to Best Buy or some place similar. Avoid Circuit City. All of the sales people work on commission. They have a tendency to get pushy with things you don't need.
I would definitely recommend buying new and a brand you know.
