Hello
We have life and health insurance at my work. Life is free and we automatically receive it. Health is not free and optional to purchase. I did not purchase the health insurance. Not long from now I will be going on maternity leave and I was wondering if this will be covered by my life policy. Or does this fall under the health plan? Also is there a lenght of time you have to be with the company? I've worked here for 13 months now.
Hope someone can help. I didn't want to ask work because they might just say "no you will not be paid for your time off" and escepially if they think I don't know any better.

We do have short term disablity. Will I be covered if I didn't purchase the health plan?
I did receive a booklet when I was hired but I'm not sure what I did with it.
How does the short term disablity plan work and what steps do I need to take to get it started?

Life insurance is paid to the beneficary if you die. Health insurance pays doctor and hospital bills. Short term disability will pay for maternity leave. You will have to contact the insurance company for claim forms, but you HR department might have them.

The company I work for offers maternity leave or disabilty leave, but it's completely seperate from the health insurance. Did you get a handbook when you got hired? It would probably be covered in that. Maybe if your company has an employee website, you could check there without asking anyone, but I advise you to find out soon. You're going to have that baby anyhow, you might as well be prepared. Good luck, have a great time being a mom, it's the best!

If you have days you may take them as vacation if you dont have days available then thats a problem and No they don't have to pay you there allowed to let you leave on maternity leave without firing you for I dotn remember how many months I think it's 3 but if you don't have paid days available you dont get paid. As for youre insurance who has been covering youre doctor visits? I dont think life covers this I thought life was for once youre retired so you may have to check into that. As for insurance if you dont have any you might have to pay out of pocket because ussually you may sign up for insurance when you commence the company or during open enrollment.

The life insurance will be paid to your beneficiary (probably your husband) only if you die. As far as maternity goes, if your company gives you paid sick days you will have to use that. You can probably use your vacation time too. They do have to give you either 6-8 weeks leave, but it doesn't have to be paid. You really need to talk to the human resources person at your job, because these things will vary from company to company. The health insurance doesn't have anything to do with how much time you can take off after your baby is born, it just helps to pay the medical expenses.

This is a question for your HR department.
Life insurance is a death benefit. Neither health or life insurance will pay you for maternity leave. If that is paid, that would be paid by the company but it will likely have to be unpaid leave. In order to change your election, you much wait until the open enrollment period.

Im not quite sure what it would fall under, I believe it would be health insurance. As for being paid, I don't believe the USA pays anyone for maternity leave. I think its basically just a guarentee that you will have your job after the maternity leave.

its a health insurance thing. Just go and ask your accountant about your options, and dont take no for a answer, ask them if you could start paying for it now.
when I was pregnant I didnt get health coverage until I was 8 months along, I did have to pay for my visits to the doctor but got reimbursed right away after recieving my benefits

Your life policy will not pay for maternity leave.
No insurance policies pay for maternity leave.
An large employer (25+ employees) is required to give you 12 weeks maternity leave and hold your job for you during that time. They do not have to pay you and most employers choose not to. A small employer can give you 12 weeks maternity leave but they are not required to hold you job for you during that time, although most employers would.
Again, they do not have to pay you during that time and most employers do not.

I think it depends upon the company not the policy. At least that's how it is in VA. Do you have an employee handbook? It should give you an outline of your companies benefits.
