I like the idea of every conference champion and like 4-6 at large teams having a playoff system. Start with 16 teams, down to 8, to 4, to 2, national champion. I hate that small schools (University of Utah, Boise State, both BCS busters for example), not getting a chance to be crowned national champions. They would have to not only win their conference, but then beat every other conference champ. I am not saying the WAC or the MWC or any other non-BCS conference would ever win the national championship, but at least it would give them a chance. The 8 team system would also work, but I like the idea of the conference champ cuz then every game is so important, especially in-conference games. Just my opinion.

I think there should be a playoff, but the bowl coalition will never let it happen for there is far too much MONEY to be made! Plus, it would be difficult to schedule a format everyone could agree with, considering the fact that you have six major conferences whose champions could lay claim to being deserving of a bid EVERY YEAR, plus MAYBE the C-USA champ and at large bids....You'd have a playoff that's WAY TOO BIG! Granted, it would be a money maker too, but it's too complicated for some people to see that. I'd love a 16 team playoff over a four week period IMMEDIATELY starting after the split conferences determine their champions. You'd have a regular season plus playoff that would be no longer than an NFL regular season. The only thing would be to find a way for the bowl system to make money from it and to get the schools to put term exams the week after Thanksgiving which would be tough, for the teams would be in preparation for playoffs/conference title games as well which would be another sticking point for a playoff scenario. To make it only 8 teams might work, but with so many teams going into the season's end in a given year undefeated or only having one loss might STILL leave a deserving team out in the cold!

I love the idea of a national playoff. Use the BCS rankings and determine the top 12 teams in the country. During the first round, the top 4 teams get a bye. For the second round, the number one seed plays the lowest remaining seed, #2 plays the second lowest reamining seed, and so on. Those 4 games could be called bowl games. Have the winners meet in the national semifinal games (two of the current BCS bowls). A week later, let the losers of those games meet in the consolation bowl (another BCS bowl) and the winners play for the title.
Settle it on the field!

I think you should have 6 teams
1 and 2 seed get a bye week to rest while the 3-6 teams play in mini playoff bowl games that will make alot more money than some .com bowl crap
Then the winners will play the 1 and 2 seeds by choice. The # 1 seed will get to pick which team they want to play and announce it live on tv.
Now you have 4 teams left which is two more bowl games where the higher seed gets most of the procceeds due to their bye week. the winners go on to the national championship.

They should but there is way too much money involved with the bowl games that keep that from happening. It is going to take 3 to 4 teams from big conferences being undefeated at the end of the year and two of those teams being left out to make a huge change. There are still too many university presidents that do not want a playoff.

Bottom line is they wont go to a playoff system. Everyone is watsing their time including me on this question. Here's the deal. The Bowl system is designed to make money. POINT BLANK. Thats why they will never go to a playoff. The commercials during the big bowls, rose bowl, fiesta bowl, etc... go for like a million dollars for 30 secs. The sponsors send the money and the tickets are marked higher. We will never see a playoff system in the NCAA Div. 1

There are pros and cons on both side of the coin. It would give a more clear-cut National Champion at the end of the season, but again, the top 8 is a very subjective subject. For example, if the season were to end today, how would you handle USC in the mix? After all, they only dropped to #7 in one poll, but after their monumental home loss to Stanford, they should have dropped out of the top 15.
No matter how it's done, someone is always going to gripe about the system. Leave it as is.

This system would be preferable to the current mess. It's going to look bad this season if LSU loses a game and the national title game is BC and USF. All of the SEC teams will be super pissed. Perhaps rightly so. We definitely need a playoff system. I like your structure. 4 first round games could be titled the Rose Bowl, Sugar bowl, Fiesta Bowl, etc. Then they still have the bowl games and everyone still makes a bunch of money. Then everyone else can still have their pointless Viagra ***** Bowls or whoever sponsor them.

That would be good. All 7 of those games could be "bowl" games still... Gator Bowl (1-8), Cotton Bowl (2-7), Peach Bowl (2-6), Orange Bowl (4-5), Sugar Bowl (Finals), Fiesta Bowl (Finals), and Rose Bowl. (Championship)

playoff system would do a lot good considering there are many teams that have a chance to win the title but can't b/c they are not ranked top #1 and #2...USC has been overrated all along too since they never play any good teams hardly...They should have a system like they do in NCAAB...it would be perfect b/c you never know how many cinderella teams are out there
