It's obviously done on purpose but what is the reason behind it?

If I painted an American flag it seems the only choice would be to paint it with the stars on the top left.

The field of stars is always oriented towards the front of the ship or plane, and the stripes are always pointed towards the rear.

So, if you look at a plane from its port side, the flag will look "correct", but from the starboard side, it looks reversed.

The flag blowing in the wind on a flagpole will often have the stars in the upper right corner. There is nothing wrong or purposely anti-flag about this. There is no backwards. It is just one side of the flag.
