No pun intended, it's as simple as this;
There are too many Chiefs and not enough Indians in the coaching staff at Florida State!
Okay, let me start off by saying I'm a die hard Nole fan and have been since I can remember. So when I say I love Bobby Bowden, I'm not saying it like Tony Joiner and Tim Tebow would say it to each other(just kidding..), but I respect the man for not only what he's done for Florida State Football, but what's he's done for ALL of College Football. Bobby Bowden has forgotten more about football than any most coaches today even know, as that might sound like a good thing, it also, as in this case, can be a bad thing. Now, with that said, he HAS to step down as head football coach at Florida State. Florida State has 4 potential head coaches as assistants, and there has to be a true head coach to be the leader, as a head coach is supposed to be! Head coaches(most) don't call offensive or defensive, but they are the head coach and make ALL head coaching decisions. IE- 3rd down play calls, 4th down calls, do we go for a punt block or return, ect, big game changing calls the head coach will make. Bobby Bowden does NOT do that anymore. He'll get on the headset and listen in to what's going on, and maybe suggest something once in awhile. That is NOT a head coach!!
Let me go back to what I said about Bowden "forgeting more than most coaches know" There comes a time in everyone's life where you can't physically and mentally do what you once could. Bobby Bowden will be 79 years old in November. It's time, Bobby, it's time.
The problem isn't at QB, RB, OL, or defense. The problem is on the coaches. While they have probably the best coaching staff in the country, who is leading the show? Who's in charge? The players probably don't even see Bobby at practice! Unless they spot him on the tower overlooking the practice field! Bobby Bowden is truly a living legend, but is he doing more harm in Tallahassee as head coach than he is helping? I hate to say it, but my answer is yes.
Ideas for a successor? The "perfect senario" that I and I'm sure everyone else was picturing goes like this... bring in Fisher as OC, let him bring his system in, go through a rebuilding year, win the ACC next year, play in a BSC bowl game, possibly the NC game, then Fisher take over as head coach next year. But, I honestly don't know? I didn't think it would be this bad this year... I still see 3 maybe 4 more losses coming this year. Florida State fans, won't be too happy at season's end if FSU goes, 7-5 or 6-6. And sadly, the average FSU fan won't have that kind of patience andwill be calling for Bowden to step down.

Bobby doesn't want to leave FSU nor will FSU force him to retire. However bad the past few years have been for Florida State, Bobby Bowden has made the Seminoles a household name in college football, and that isn't going to change because of a few bad seasons.
As for who will Bobby's successors be? I personally would love to see Mickey Andrews - he is hands down one of the BEST defensive coaches in college football - however horrible the FSU offense is, our defense is always solid. Who knows though. Bobby brought in Chuck Amato as the "Executive Head Coach" and Jimbo as the Offensive Coordinator for a reason and either guy would be more than qualified to take over Bobby's position.

Bobby Bowden will step down when he chooses to because the university will not push him out the door. As far as a replacement, his old friend who is now coaching the offensive line would probably be a good choice. Also, I feel Jimbo Fisher (the offensive coordinator) made the move to FSU in hopes of having a shot of being the coach one day. Note that Nick Saban asked Jimbo to join him at Bama (remember they were together at LSU) but he thought the FSU gig was a better opportunity for him.

I don't think he'll step down and I don't think it's going to be Terry Bowden who is going to take over. I would like to see Micky Andrews take over. I know when I was working in the athletic department 98-2000 all the players loved Mickey. Some of the players who played on offense wanted to play for him. He is hard nosed, but he brings his defense to play.
The situation with the QB is more than them. X is better than Weatherford, but something else is going on that we don't know about. Weatherford can't move the ball and X doesn't seem like he is having any fun. We need someone is who going to lead the team and score. X can do those things, but I think he feels the pressure of getting pulled and it showed last night.
It's sad because I love the school and the program. They have top notch facilities and Coach Bowden has done wonders for the school, but it might be passing him by. My only suggestion is to possibly get some new blood that is going to rejuvenate the program to elite status again.

If this is his final year, then FSU needs to move away from the Bowden family all together and start fresh. I would suggest a young and fresh defensive coordinator from an NFL team to build the team around a strong, physical and exceptionally fast defense and then implement a good rushing game. Bring back smashmouth football to counter the ever more popular "spread" offense. Perhaps someone like Greg Manusky of the 49rs.

Bowden has been a great coach for years, but I think it's about time for him to go... He won't go until someone forces him out the door... When he does go, I think they will try to get Georgia's Mark Richt. Richt was an assistant to Bowden for a few years before he became head coach at UGA.

Yeah It looks like it. But I think he got Jimbo Fisher from LSU to help him win one more Championship. Then he will give it to Jimbo.
