I disagree that Columbus was the most disgusting hero. In spite of the fact Indians were infected with European diseases and later were killed by the explorers and others who emigrated to the New World, no one knew the causes of those diseases or how to prevent them. Technology was not as advanced as it is now. Columbus stumbled on the discovery of the American continents accidentally while searching for the passage to the Orient. Think about this, how many of you would be living here if he had not discovered this continent? It is very easy to blame one individual for the sins of many. It wasn't until the discovery of the new world and the treasures that were found that Spaniards came to seek riches for God, King, and country as evidenced by their greed and enslavement of the indigenous people. Later the French came in search of furs and other riches. The British also played a role in the destruction of the native population. One must be careful when passing judgment on the deeds of the past. Ask yourself if would have done differently given the knowledge of the time and the potential exploitation of the weaker people already living here. Europeans and Americans have a long history of exploiting indigenous the people through the imperialistic search for other riches that could be found.

it is funny all this hate toward Columbus, who had any other wrong of being a good sailor .. as a Spanish Governor didn't act differently than many other, and his government was very short and regarded only the few lands he had discovered. I think many people do not understand the differences between, for example, Columbus, Cortes, Pizarro and Ponce de Leon. Technology was ready for ocean sailing, from many years. So if not Columbus arriving to America , it would have been someone other, maybe even worse. For example Henry Morgan.... ;)
Vlad Tepes called "The Dracul" is considered an hero in Romania, as was a prince able to oppose to Turk invasion, even successfully. In a Europe terrified by Turks strenght and cruelty he was the only able to terrify even Turks. He was a cuelt Lord, but in Romania there are yet many stories and legend describing how correct was his c gouvernement and how safe was his country. For example it is written he left a golden cup for drinking near a well, and he was sure none would steal it as the fear of punishment was great... was also a weird man, but this was also due to his teenage experiences as prisoner of Turks.
Nowaday there is people who order killings far away from the targets, without taking any danger, that is much more disgusting....... (terrorist Leaders, many state leaders.......)

Since when was Vlad the Impaler anyone's hero?
How about Benjamin Franklin...who despite his contributions was an unwashed and lecherous old man? Or Samuel Pepys...who would sit on park benches in public and masturbate beneath his clothing while reading pornographic literature? Or Ghandi? Always had a tall glass of urine each day because he said it kept him healthy.
How 'bout them apples Sonny?
