What is the historical fact behind GMT? I mean, why do we put the clocks forward in spring, and back in the autumn/winter? When did this actually start happening?

Oh, and when do we put the clocks back this year?

Thanks to one and all!!

William Willett became convinced that clocks should be moved backwards in autumn and forwards in spring in order that people could take advantage of the hours of daylight. He wrote a famous leaflet, The Waste of Daylight, and worked tirelessly to have his idea adopted. Eventually it became law a year after his premature death at the age of 59 in 1915.

Second part first.... Sunday 28th October to GMT> I think the use of BST in summer was introduced in WW! to give longer hours to farm and to produce war necessities. Has been in use ever since.. Many would like to retain BST permanently.

Benjamin Franklin first thought it up.

Modern daylight savings was first proposed in 1907 by William Willett, and saw its first widespread use in 1916 as a wartime measure aimed at conserving coal. Despite controversy, many countries have used it since then; details vary by location and change occasionally.

I believe it started during the 1st World war. It was so people to get to munitions factories in daylight.

At the same time restricted drinking hours were brought in as well.
