What Ortiz and Francona's comments tell me is that the general consensus is that it's not about Joe Torre's job, it's all about how much George Steinbrenner is hated throughout the major leagues.
And justifiably so! He is the only person who honestly thinks he can control all of baseball. He nearly single handedly brought baseball to the brink of colapse via his defiance over salary cap proposal through union arbitration back in 1994. Then he made dam sure that wouldn't happen again by railroading baseball and getting his personal puppet Bud Selig to play the part of "commissioner". Now he thinks that if he doesn't win the world series every single season, the people working for him are nothing but losers. To make an example of Joe Torre (at least in his mind) will strike the fear in the hearts of all baseball personnel and ownerships.
This man belongs in a rubber room!

Yes. In reference to some of the dissenting comments, Francona was widely viewed after '04 as a young potentially great manager, but he hasn't won since then, despite the 2nd highest payroll. In fact didn't even make the playoffs last year. Guillen was a media hero after '05, since then nothing.
Leyland and Randolph last year were lauded by everyone, this year they had essentially the same teams but they didn't even make the postseason.
Bobby Cox is 1 for 5 in the World Series, and hasn't been back since 1999.
And as far as payroll goes, for 2007, in the NL West Dodgers was $108M, Rockies was $54, in the NL East, Mets was $115, Phillies $89, in the AL Central White Sox was $108, Cleveland $61.
So the reality is that payroll by no means guarantees success.
It is very difficult for a team to sustain regular season performance year after year after year like Torre has done, let alone the playoffs which has a huge element of randomness.

Actually ssshadi Ortiz has a better shot at seeing more World Series as a Red Sox player than a Yankee. He went in 2004, and he has a chance to go again this year. Yankees haven't made it past the first round the last three years, and haven't made it to the World Series since 2003 or won it since 2000. Tony said it best, that group of Yankees can't be managed by a soft manager. They need a fired up manager, one with a voice, one who is active, one who will bench a player for not running out an infield hit or chasing down a ground ball, regardless of their salary.

Remember Joe Torre had a losing record before joining the Yankees. I bet you that if a hobo from New York was to coach the Yankees he'd have a winning record too. A great lineup like the Yankees cannot be managed by a soft coach.

Conventional wisdom says Torre should return and these comments are as much a reflection on the dysfunctional management of the Yankees as it is support for Torre.

I am feeling more and more confident on Torre coming back.
Why?
(1. George isnt going to let Pettite, Posada, and Mo go.
(2. He cant stand up to Suzyn Waldman.
(3. He doesnt have the guts to fire a long time freind.
(4. He doesnt want to deal with the NY fans exploding about Torre being fired.
(5. He knows their will be a eruption and he will be pounded on.

torre is one of the best managers in baseball's long history.
nobody should have to defend him because he shouldnt be on the spot. if there is anyone to balme in new york its cashman because he is bringing in over priced over the hill players who can barely limp through the season. joe torre's stats speak for him and he deserves a lot of respect. 12 STRAIGHT PLAYOFFS!! torre is extremely good with handling pressure, the media, ant the BOSS! he MUST return as manager, otherwise the yankees will really fall apart.
it is hard enough finding a great manager that the players really respect and are loyal to, but if the rivals show this much respect he deserves to return

Absolutely...........I have to give a lot of credit to Ortiz and Francona for being real baseball people and standing up/speaking out for what they believe........To see it's not only members of Joe's team that give him that respect but the team that plays the hardest against us speaks out says a lot about them and Joe............I give those guys a world of credit and they now have my respect as honest people........CAT

I think Ortiz would rather play for New York. He might see the World Series more than once in his career. But yeah, props to him and Francona.
