The Rockies are just there because they are the hottest team at the right time, much the same that the Phillies were considered one of the best until the Rockies dismantled them. I think in a season of ups and downs you could make a case for any of those three; the Phillies and Mets as the top teams, they were all real close to each other in their finishes. You could try and figure out who is the best three weeks and come up with ten different conclusions...people will want to throw in the Cubs and Breweres as well. I would have to say that right now we know that for this postseason the Rockies and D-Backs are the cream of the NL crop and it looks like the Rockies will be the team...they are on fire right now! Record wise during the season you could say that they were the best along witht he Phillies because they were all four around the same record. I can not make that arguement myself though. I think that the West benefits from getting to pummel the Giants and Dodgers extra times!
Can anyone truthfully say that they thought the Rockies would go to the series before this season?

On paper, no. That would be the Phillies, Cubs Dodger, and even the Mets. However, "THAT'S WHY THEY PLAY THE GAME"!
The Phillies were second only to the Yankees in runs scored in the entire major league. But as we've learn, hitting wins games but pitching wins championships.
I know that the Rockies and D-Backs are the last two standing in the NL but I'm not convinced that they are two of the three best teams.
Ever since the playoffs became part of the game it's been proven that you don't necessarily have to be good to win. You just have to be hot at the right time.
Go back to 1969 when it all started. History is full of mediocre teams being called "World Champions".

Maybe. I thought the Phillies were, but after their show against the Rockies, it is hard to say. I would have to say the answer to your question is yes. There really isn't one incredibly dominant team is the league, but there are (or I should say were) a bunch of teams that excell in one skill, whether it is pitching, hitting, fielding. The Rockies have hitting. The Padres have pitching. The DBacks have 32 wins in one-run games.
It's hard to go against those three teams.

The Padres are the best for reaching the playoffs for two strait seasons. And the Rockies and Diamondbacks are the best for reaching the playoffs this season.

no, the padres didn't make the playoffs, thus they are not one of the top 4 teams. you have to play with the cards you are dealt. if you finish 3rd in your division you are not one of the top teams.
