Hi there

Your question raises interesting problems.

Was this an Internet consultation?

It's very hard to be sure of what you're getting across the internet.

This problem is solved it might seem by a new site called registereddoctors.com, which seems to be setting up at

http://registereddoctors.com/

They say under their FAQs that they check their doctors are registered with the Federal State Licensing Board if in the US (eg NY State for doctors registered in New York), or the General Medical Council in the UK, plus give them an exam of their skills.

I guess you could go to these organisations like the state licensing boards in the US or the GMC in the UK directly to check if your doctor is a registered physician.

This new site also says that it will allow clients to rate their doctors and members will be able to see the doctors' ratings from previous patients before choosing a specialist, as well as see their qualifications and experience!

I agree with Frank. There is a new service that solves much of these problems. See a doctor online whenever you want and know how their performance rates according to patients who have used that doctor previously. Brilliant! Why is this not normally possible? Visit www.registereddoctors.com and register and they will send you more information.

General Medical Council has a list of registered doctors. It is a requirement that foreign qualified doctors are registered in the UK.

In the US, there are various Boards (internal medicine, cardiology, etc.), and I believe that there is one for infectious diseases. You could check their websites.

My advice would be to call the dept. or ministry of health wherever you received the treatment, or at least check out the websites.

Check with your state's medical licensing board. All doctors have to be licensed to practice in the state where they are working.
