Other than suing for defamation of character how do you put a stop to this? She is very distraught that she can't get the reference she expected out of them now. She was their top performer and her boss was threatened by her. He is telling employees she was reason for companies current situation - completely untrue.

I guess the second part of the question is - how to distance yourself from that garbage and move on when the lay off and harsh words leave you beat down and paralized?

Something like that happened to me.

You have to move on and not use them as a reference. It is very rare that you would get a reference out of a company that lets you go. There is no way of stopping this. It is next to impossible to win a defamation of character suite on something like this. She got let go for a reason (right or wrong) and they can say why. Unless they are saying that she did things she didn't do, and you have to prove that it was harming you. They don't have to give you a reference or a good one at that.

Also I have to say, I was upset too. I was a excelling and breaking new ground and then was laid off (but it was more like fired) After a few weeks I began to re-asses the situation and look at the "Why." One thing I found was that while I didn't brag about successes I wasn't humble either. Also I let me opinions be know- spoke more than listened. That helped me do better in my next job.

I had a boos like that. New mgmt came in and restaffed so they let us go! I havent been able to get a good refernce, but of course i cant prove he isnt giving a good one, but I have feeling.
So I have decided to use the boss that hired me origonally for references.
Good luck to you and your fiance

Because this is a law forum that is the only issue I will address.

And for that issue and according to the facts present in the post, your fiance has no legal recourse.

All it will take is a "nicely" worded letter from an attorney. It may cost you five hundred bucks but they are amazing with the results they can get.

The best way to distance yourself from these individuals is to rise waaaaay above them. Living well is the best revenge.

Obviously her boss wanted to sleep with her and she refused, you should give your fiance a hug and tell her you love her.
