Global warming is real. The debate isn't about the facts, but about the cause of the facts. (At least, it isn't about the facts for those who bother to LEARN a few facts.) The question up for debate now is whether human activities are driving the very real increase in ocean temperatures or whether the change is the result of a natural cycle.
By the way, "Global Warming" doesn't automatically mean "warmer" winters. It does imply more evaporation and energy over the oceans, which puts more water into the air in the interiors of the country, which may mean heavier rains or heavier snows. How long were folks stranded on I 25 in Colorado last winter when the three blizzards went through about Christmas time, one right after another? That extra moisture in the air might also cause the temperatures to be lower locally rather than higher. Odd how actual facts work out, isn't it.
Edit - I just re-read my post, and realized I didn't express an opinion on what I think the cause is. Given the fact that cycles occurred without human input, there is evidence for that theory. There are additional facts we can bring to bear on our understanding. Naturally occurring carbon dioxide is a different isotope than the isotope produced when we have burned fossil fuels. Guess what is showing up in the air that wasn't trapped in historical ice cores? In addition, the rate of change is overwhelmingly different from cycles in the past, and the difference is very likely human in its origin.
I really like the answers here that said, in effect, so what if it is a hoax? How does going green hurt anyone? Going green generally reduces our dependence on foreign oil. How would that hurt anyone in the US? Going green is often more thrifty at a local level. How is saving my hard-earned money bad for me? The original question is little other than an invitation to rant.
Additional edit - I just came across this question. The additional information says it quite well, I think:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071012091445AAmAs1d&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMiDZXUcjEJE4f3H_RIzMYe3uYfAkahMLlFw--&paid=answered#Ls10Hmb7UDfbAkvaUSSN

Perhaps you need to invest in a window and a news paper
ALL scientists agree that the planet is getting warmer
The disagreement is over cause not the symptom
The Arctic is melting and yielding a North west passage - The US Greenland Canada and Russia are in an argument over who is going to collect the toll because the all know it is a warming coming reality The US never engaged in this debate 25 yrs ago because it wasn't a soon coming reality
The largest of the great lakes (Superior) is losing water at an unprecedented rate - Climate change so these people called "scientists" say
Cold air is moving away from the poles and creating some odd weather - and that cold air is warming up Once there is no more cold air to warm up welcome to the frying pan
Does it or does it not have anything to do with C02 ?
That the scientists are arguing about
Is it getting hotter around here ? It is and the all say it and they all know it
What is your problem - No newspapers and no windows where you live ?

I don't think that Global Warming is a hoax. It's happened four or five times before. It's called the Iceage and the Meltdowns. However, to say that humans are the sole cause is naive. As for B-Chan's answer up there. Scientist are human and use their biases when they conduct their research. Scientist on both sides of the arguement are not unbiased computers. Some of these answers are not well thought out.

The question of global warming is not about "is there global warming" but if there is a possibility that we can effect the climate how can we do it in a positive manor. The problem is that both extremes are trying to distort information and shape it to discredit the competition. If the economy can be stimulated by being "green" should it matter whether there is global warming?

I don't know about global warming from a scientific point of view, I am not a scientist. I have however read history and have become aware that throughout history we have had cycles of weather patterns. These cycles seem to go on whether we are actively involved or not.
It seems to me that we are becoming vary arrogant in our thinking. We think that we actually have control over everything. In that sense, we are like some of the early civilizations. Perhaps if we sacrificed someone to the Sun God we would be saved from bad weather.

Lets just say you are right
And we ignore the issue
Nothing happens and we just keep going along and the earth is happy.
Lets just say you wrong.
Global warming is a big problem.
We fix that problem, plus we fix the environment at the same time.
We then save the human race.
Lets just say, we do nothing and let business decide, and let us keep muddling along.
Will we survive, or not?
The best case scenario is yours
The worst case scenario is extinction
The middle ground is a clusterphuk
Ask yourself with as much positive energy which will be 100% correct.
My point is, you don't know, nor do I, but it seems the best and the brightest of our scientist worldwide says we have a big problem.
Are you willing to bet you life that we don't?
============
Thumbs down from the "bet your life crowd" that we don't have a problem. These are probably the same people that believed Iraq would be a cake walk.

Yes, you canceled my vote, but you didn't cancel two votes.

Because US politics is dominated by a false right-left paradigm.
each side it promoting a set of Zionist dictated issues - on the bogus right war for Israel, 'global security' police state measures, the Left Global warming and gun control.
supporters of both parties dance to the Zionist tune.

I don't know, why don't conservatives understand the simplest of science?
Here's the basics.
CO2 absorbs infrared radiation which is heat.
CO2 has been increasing
Deforestation continues so the CO2 can't be reduced
Therefore, the Earth wil continue to increase in temperature.
These are simple scientific facts. My 8 year old understnads them. Is it possible that cons couldn't win on a program called "Are you smarter than a third grader"?

Last week temperatures in cities like Chicago, and DC reached record highs. I thought I'd tell you since you are obviously NOT paying attention. Even your god Bush admits that global warming exists and that part of it is due to man mad causes. When will some stubborn fools realize that most of the world agrees that it is a problem? I guess some people get a bug up their tush and bury their heads in the sand then refuse to move.
Even if one doesn't believe global warming is real, wouldn't it make sense to strive for cleaner air and water? Wouldn't it make sense to wean ourselves off the use of fossil fuels that we and our allies depend on? Those fossil fuels that make Muslim extremists wealthy or have access to wealth? They want to live in the 14th Century and we should let them. We can do that by not buying their oil. If we have alternative, renewable, sustainable, "green" energy sources they can live in the 14th Century all they want and the rest of the world can move into the 21st Century.

Until all the new taxes laws and regulations slap them in the face..they are never going to believe it's a natural occurance of the earth changing ways..as it has done for millions of years...I live in the desert and sea fossils are found frequently...so who's to blame for the lack of water that disapeared millions of yrs ago?
Back in the 70's the ozone hole was getting bigger and we were al going to burn to death in the near future..but today it's smaller....there was glaciers reaching down to almost florida..millions of yrs ago they retreated....and continue to retreat..so who's fault is it?
I guess we need more real science in schools not fad science.
