Since i am nearing the age of going to university/highschool the topic of universities are discussed a lot between my friends and family. My aunt was telling my mom about her friend who's daughter went to watever college, which was ONLY in the top 30. isn't that already really good? and my friend's brother went to a university which was "only" in the top 20s. isn't that really good too???

"Top 30" out of what? Top 30 in the world? That's great. Top 30 in Europe? That's very nice. Top 30 in the US - in a country with thousands of unis, that's really, really good. Top 30 in the Czech Republic - there aren't even all that many unis in the CR, so no, that's not that great.

They're just bragging. Worse, they're probably wrong! I find that most people, in university or with kids in university, think that their school ranks, say, #1 in computer science in the UK, and they are actually completely clueless.

Don't pay attention to them. Sure, be aware of the rankings lists - and there are a lot out there - but more important than how some school falls on a list is how well it fits you. After all, it will do you no good to get into #1 university (Oxford or Cambridge, depending on the week), or #1 for tech (Imperial), and then hate because it's a poor fit, and fail. It'll do you far more in your life and career to go to a somewhat lower ranked but respectable university and do really well there because you like it.

There are several ranking systems, so when people focus that much on rankings, they are really bragging, because most schools don't rank the same for everyone, and I'd be willing to bet these are the best of the rankings those schools got! What this says to me is that out of thousands of universiites in this country, these schools, while maybe not Harvard or Stanford, were very good.

Don't ever go to a school just because of someone else's approval or so they can brag or moan about it. Who cares about that. Attend the place that you think best fits you, your major requirements ,and how your major can drive you into a career that you want. Constructive criticism is always something you should take to mind in assessing programs, but discussions on why you should go to one school over another merely because of rank is mindless dribble.

depends on the 'table', the times is it?
my university was either in the top 10, top 3, or top 20, depending on the criteria, just pick the best course for you, that's the main thing
