We live in a basement apartment with tile floors. We have several rugs, but no carpet! Suddenly my family is finding fleas on everyone, especially my 2 year old son who must be particularly delicious. Help! We don't have any pets, so we can only guess that they have begun to come inside to find water (and humans). I need to find a way to get rid of them that is not dangerous to my son. This began just yesterday, and now they are everywhere! I never saw a flea in this house before yesterday morning, but we have found a steady stream of them since then. They have got to go!

They could be coming in from mice, check that out, and from squirrels in the yard, picking them up when walking through the grass. Fleas will bite humans but, can't live on human blood and will die but, in the meantime they can be a pain.
There are the tree huggers that won't use poison but, they either take forever to get rid of fleas or really can't get rid of them, they kind of struggle along until they run their life cycle.

If I were you I'd go to Home Depot before you and your son are all chewed up and get three or four "bombs" for fleas and then plan a day out, then make a plan to drop him off somewhere and come home to clean up.

I'm not saying this will work 100% but, it'll work better then any of these others. Fleas are very hard to get rid of.

If your pets don't spend alot of time outside, they are probably getting the fleas from inside. The flea eggs lay dormant in your carpet for a long time. Have a pro exterminator come out and do his thing. That is the only sure way to get rid of the eggs. Can do the outside area that the pets are in yourself. Buy the stuff at walmart and follow the directions. I know from experience about this. Don't forget to empty the vacuum bag also or the eggs can hatch in it. The advantage works, but the fleas has to bite the pet first to ingest it. Careful not to use any other flea product on your pets while they are on other flea control. The advantage will stop the life cycle of the flea before more eggs are laid. Good luck.

Don't let anyone talk you into poison. We have 3 dogs, and they bring in a lot of pests after being outdoors. We use a trap that is easy to set up. Place a low sided pan, (pie or cake) in the middle of a room. Add 2 drops of dish soap and fill 1/2 way with water. Place a chair next to the pan, and use a clamp light on a leg, directly over and about 8 " above the pan. Turn the clamp light on, and all other lights off. The fleas will jump at the light, and fall into the soapy water, and drown. In the morning simply pour the pan into the sink and flush down the drain. Fleas eggs hatch in about 2 weeks, so keep the trap active at least that long. Move it from room to room each night, to catch them all. This trap works well on fleas, mosquitos, house flies, fruit flies, and moths. Good luck.

Mule Team Borax found in the laundry detergent section of your local WalMart will kill them. Sprinkle it on furniture, floors, rugs, just every fabric in the house. Sprinkle it in your basement and around your baseboards. Leave it for a day or two. Then vacuum. Throw the bag away. You may have to do it again in 10 days when the fleas rehatch.

Fleas come from the ground. Sandfleas are a huge problem in some areas near the river whether or not people have pets.

the can live in the rugs .... there is a product out called flea stoppers it is a powder you can put it in the couch & chairs as well as the carpet & or rugs . spread it all over the rugs away from any kids then brush it in the rugs with your broom after it sits for a day then vacum . this should give you a yr . & I have used it & have to kids plus pets it. works , the vet use to sell it but now I think you have to get it form a pet store like pets mart . its about 40.00 a plastic bottle about 24inches tall you will not need much . but you will have it if needed next year . & have the maintace spray the outside of the building .

You're right about how the fleas have to come from somewhere. You might want to talk with your landlord about having the yard treated.

Inside, use borax and a vacuum cleaner, and wash your bedding.

Good luck!
