I've heard creosote is the best. Also, I hope no one in your house is afraid of spiders, because we were over run with them after pulling the ivy down from our house!

Cut off the ivy to the stump, just above ground level, and paint thestump with creosote, or oil based black paint. garden centers sell stuff you can paint on the stump that won't allow it to grow. It will seep into the stump and kill it. For some reason, it is safe to use, ans won't contaminate the soil!!

What you see on the walls are called holdfasts. If its in the ground it would be a root but without soil in the wall they don't grow. You can just leave them, they will dry up and fall away.

Go to your local lowes or pesticide store and purchase ivy killer. It kills them down to the roots permenately.

Then use gloves to pull them out when they are dead.
DO NOT BURN THEM...that causes a toxic smoke if inhaled can hurt you seriously and put you in the hospital.

Place them in a trash bag and dispose of it properly.

you only need to check the soil at the base of the wall(s)..if you dig the roots out it wont return.
