Well I think humans have advanced in technology pretty well during the las century. I think if we could get past the racism and hate and greedness, humans have the intelligence to survive. They can colonized the moon and from there go to other planets. We can also advance in medicine, surgeries and such to prolong human life.
The only problem is the selfish, greedy ways of humans stop them from becoming great. We can become knowledgable but what we need most is to become wise.
Think of all the past wars and the ones going on now and is so dumb. Spending billions in weapons to destroy our selfs. Wow, maybe due to our stupidity we do become extinct.
Well, then mabye the planet will be a better place. Maybe another species is more intelligent and wise than us. Or maybe God does exists and will end our stupidity soon.

It's impossible to say, I would assume that some current insects would survive a mass extinction.
A new species, would take our place, then estimated 4Billion years into the future our sun will finally go Supernova, well, kind of Supernova, it will expand before withering into a small ball of light which will eventually die.
Note: Our star (Sun) is too small for a Supernova or Gamma-ray burst.
