By appeasing the terrorist Arafat (#1 VISITOR IN CLINTON WHITEHOUSE) they both made it worse. What Arab state has welcomed the Palestinians and treated them as brothers? NONE. They treat the Palestinians in their own countries worse than slaves. The Palestinians were offered land and opportunity- they will NEVER get it all so they need to be rational and settle for a two state solution. Israel has taken a desert and made it into something special- what have the others done?

Jimmy Carter mediated a peace between Egypt and Israel that has lasted to this day. Since it was the Egyptian leadership that led the wars of 1956, 1967 and 1973 we have to assume that what fragile peace has endured owes its existence to those efforts.

Those who mock President Carter have read too much partisan election material. Those who mock the Nobel Peace Prize he won for it have read too little history.

They paved the way for peace talks.

There was communication; however, Arafat decided to back out in the end.

And then he ended.

Now, Palestine is a country divided, with Hamas controlling the Gaza Strip, and Fatah controlling the West Bank.

Palestine needs to be a complete country again, at peace with itself, before it can have Peace with Israel.

Every President since the 1960's has tried to improve the problems in that region. Unfortunately each side is so comsumed with self pity about being picked on they have no room to offer a solution.

I'm pretty sure that Condi and Elliot Abrams' embargo of the Gaza Strip made things worse.
