Once upon a time, it was possible to make the pop charts without writing any lyrics.
Dueling Banjoes. Nadia's Theme. Telstar. And TV themes -- Hawai FIve-Oh,
Mission Impossible, the theme from "The Rockford Files." But I never hear instrumental
music on pop radio anymore. What was the last instrumental tune to be a hit?

Kenny G's "Songbird" made it to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1987, "Silhouette" reached #13 in 1988, and "Auld Lang Syne" hit #7 in 1999.

The last number 1 was "Crockett's Theme" (From "Miami Vice") by Jan Hammer in 1985.

Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" was released in 1983.

I think it's was the "Miami Vice" Theme. Rockit by Herbie Hancock came out in 1983. He did perform in 1985 at the Grammy Awards though.

The Miami Vice Theme was first heard by the public in September 1984 and released as a single in 1985.

I'm not sure, but I sure do miss the old instrumental songs like 'Walk, Don't Run', 'Time Is Tight', 'Green Onions' and 'Soulful Strut'.

There is a collection of pop instrumentals by Rhino Records of songs from the 60s and 70s that I have in my collection that include 'Popcorn', 'Joy', 'Apricot Brandy', 'Frankenstein', 'A Fifth of Beethoven' and a lot more. These CDs are well worth owning and listening!
