I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. I have just used crucial.com to check how much memory i have on my laptop. It says i have 256MB of RAM, but when i go to control panel>performance and maintenance>system, it says the i have 504MB RAM. Is my laptop right, or crucial.com. I don't know what to do as i was hoping to upgrade my memory and add more RAM. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would go w/ what the the laptop says. You most likely have 8Mb of shared memory w/ a video card or something. But make sure you use Dell RAM or it will void your warranty. This happened to my sister-in-law. If you no longer have a warranty to worry about, just make sure the RAM is compatible.

The best way to tell is to go to http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/en/details?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs and it will tell you what your laptop has on it. You will need your TAG number off the PC. Then click on Original System Configuration.

It easier for you to open the RAM compartment and check the RAM. It is written on the chip. Check at the same time if there is a place for additional RAM or you have to replace it with higher memory.
Caution: do not attempt to remove and re-install the RAM from its place if the battery is installed eventhough the unit is shutdown. It will create a short circuit which will cause damage to your laptop. Remove the battery first before doing so or rather ask the assistance of a qualified technician.

im pretty sure that your comp is sharing the memory with the graphics card. but then again ive never heard of 504mb of ram before. also i wouldnt try upgrading a laptop yourself unless you are very skilled. take it to a geekaquad or a techshop to get it installed. also they can help you further with this issue. the other way to find out is find all the documentation that came with the lappy and it should say whats inside and how much ram

Go to your start button, select run.. Type msconfig32 ...
It will show your system information... Look on the right had side where the window comes up... Read through it, and look for "Total Physical Memory" It should tell you how much RAM you have installed.
Total physical memory should be right below Time Zone.

Again:

Start Menu
Run
Type in msinfo32
Read the information. Don't select anything from the left hand side. System information will be the information shown on the right side.
Look for "Total Physical Memory"

You have 512 mb Ram ... 8 MB is being used by your graphics chip so giving you a reading of 504mb
It also depends on whether you have 1 stick of 512 or 2 sticks of 256 as to how easy it will be to add more ... The Belarc.com website does have a useful downloadable tool (as mentioned earlier) or have it checked by a computer store ... they shouldn't charge you to pop the cover off and look

Don't rely on the Crucial online scan - more often than not it is wrong.

Go online to DELL and enter your model number and then the DELL ID number on the side of the case - it will list all the components of your PC - if you have trouble finding the info - email your PC details across and I'll find it for you

Go here and enter your lappy service tag

Your laptop knows your memory better than crucial. Your laptop undoubtedly has 512 MB, which is not bad. Your video card is borrowing 8 MB.

To find out how much RAM is installed in your PC, go into setup when you first turn on the PC. It will show you how much physical RAM is installed, before any of it is allocated to your graphics card in your laptop.

I'd trust my computer before I'd trust a website.

Go to the Dell website and see what your laptop is supposed to have and what it can handle before buying more RAM.

Any other questions, feel free to email me.
