Just because a person feels sad does not mean that they are suffering from depression. Depression (clinical) means that you are unhappy, not feeling yourself, not enjoying things that you usually do, not being able to have the same energy that you used to have. IF these symptoms last for more than two weeks it's considered clinical depression. Depression can last for years and if not treated can lead to even worse things like suicide. There are some people like myself who have to deal with chronic depression, I've been treated for depression for over 40 years. There are times when I can deal very well and barely know that I have depression and other times when it's really bad and it almost takes over my life. I've raised my children while dealing with depression and some times it's better than others. I have tried a lot of different medications and I've had several different therapist's
I have found maybe not the perfect psychiatrist but the one that I needed and I've found that I can talk to him about any thing and everything. We don't always agree but we are a team that really wants me to be better and we're willing to work to make it work. So yes depression is real and there are times when you wonder if it will ever get better, but it can if you're willing to work with your therapist.

There's a difference between having the mental disorder, depression, and being unhappy for a short period of time. The word "depressed" is often misused. Depression itself is a disorder where the person is constantly going in and out of deep unhappiness that could last for days, weeks and months. Being sad once in awhile is a totally different story. Like if your dog dies, yes you are in sadness for a while but it's over mourning, not a serious mental disorder. Depression disrupts a persons everyday life, when they are in one of their periods of deep unhappiness they will not want to get out of bed, or speak to anyone. They will miss work or school, avoid prior engagements and just be very isolated from everything. Also, you can have depression your entire life, there is medication to sort of control your emotions, but it never completely will go away.

There are different types of depression ranging from low to very serious, or suicidal. Mostly when a person goes from one extreme to the other in eating, sleeping, isolating oneself, and losing interest in what they had interest in before, for two weeks or more, then it is depression.
Only a qualified professional can diagnose and treat depression for sure.
Depression can stay for years if not treated. Some people have shortages of hormones called serotonin and norephenephrin in the brain. When these are at a low, medication may be required for a long time.

there are different types of depression and not all of them have to have to the point you will not get out of bed. there is depression that is short term after a sad issue happens, such as a break up, or a death. then there is depression that is caused by a chemical in balance in the brain. this a depression you live with. if you feel you are depressed or know somebody who is and they are having trouble doing everyday activities get help! depression may or may not ever go away. only a mental health provider can determine after counseling what type of depression this person may have.

when it goes on for more than a simple week or even months, something is up.
if you're up and down mentally every other week/month you might be bipolar.
Thinking about self-harm is also a large part.
I am function to do a job and clearly take care of a house. It slows you down, but you're not done for.
Depression can stay FOREVER, if you don't get help. I've gotten help & sure I have my up and down days but I'm still able "function".

Everyone gets down from time to time but in a healthy person the bad feelings remain controlled and subside to be eventually replaced by good feelings. In a depressed person the feeling of doom and gloom and meaningless is extreme and it doesn't go away.
