...as sin. For years there was always a controversy regarding their guilt. Especially since Senator Joe McCarthy..the drunken, lying, malicious "Commie hunter" aided by his weasel faced stooge Roy Cohen (with the assistance of Robert F. Kennedy I might add) made it a point to hang them out to dry.
Several years ago the old KGB/NKVD files were released to the world and there were loads of files detailing the Rosenbergs (and their brother in law) role in sending atomic secrets to the Soviets. So..they most certainally were guilty.

Normally I would not use a Wikipedia entry for a still controversial incident in history, but after reading the piece it seems to be fair and evenhanded.
The second web entry is pro innocence, but I included it so you could see some of the passion which this case still ignites.
My opinion? They were guilty. But maybe Ethel should not have been executed.

Nope.

I wish they HAD been - other countries needed to armed with nuclear weapons to balance off the U.S. monopoly. Thank goodness the Soviets did it on their own.

But the Rosenbergs were framed -
1. Because the American mythology was that no one else was smart enough to get the bomb on their own.
2. Because they were American communists, and the right-wing and the liberals were united in their desire to paint leftists as evil traitors.
3. Because they were Jewish, and anti-semitism was (and is!) alive and well in the USA.

The "secret documents" that the Rosenbergs supposedly passed to the Soviets were in a SEALED ENVELOPE, never shown to the jury! Years later, it was opened, and the drawings inside turned out to be LESS detailed than the 1946 Encyclopedia Brittanica's entry on "atomic bomb."

It was all a scam, to get Americans ready for McCarthyism and the cold war.

Yes-Particularly Julius - Ethel is still up in the air.
Should they have been executed? Julius yes - Ethel no.
Lots of research required here. I'm, admittedly, shooting from the hip with what I've learned over time.
