In my opinion the underlying motive is greed. Both on the part of the Chinese manufacturers and on the part of the American companies that order them. As for food contamination, food produced here in the US is also frequently contaminated. Profit before people seems to be the industrial motto these days and it is on an international scale.

I don't think it has any underlying motive as it is now Viet Nam and Taiwan that are sending over products contained with lead and food coming from over those 2 other countries are all making people sick. I just think it is some countries that may not know about lead making you sick and that Small parts on toys are also dangerous also. The workers are paid badly and just do what they are told to do.
I think it is our Country that is trying to get things for a cheaper buck. It shows me just how much the government really doesn't care what happens to its people and someone is getting rich off of all of this. You notice to that they do nothing until it involves a widespread area that they even put out a warning.
No, I do not buy foods from any other country except what our stores have put onto our food shelves. Then, they don't always put where food has been grown. I think it is just a grab a bargain and hope no one gets sick.

I simply refuse to buy foreign. I realize that alot of produce as well comes from foreign countries.
I grow my own.
I do wonder at times if there is an underlying motive coming out of China.
It simply doesn't make since though. Americans are the financial back bone to China. Why cut off your nose to spite your face ?
We do need to bring back manufacturing jobs to the United States.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if Mattel with drew from China and brought those jobs back to the U.S.?
Everyone is always looking for cheap labor. At a cost to the health of the citizens of the U.S.
I say, China has had more then adequate warning regarding the use of lead based paints in the children's toys.
Now there is a recall on many lip sticks which contain three times the acceptable amount of lead in them.
I think that possibly China will eventually wake up that the U.S. is not going to accept these tainted products and change their manufacturing standards.
Here in the United States we must continue to test these products when they come from abroad.
As I stated before, I refuse to purchase products from any other country.
Now I'm beginning to question myself. I recently purchased a cooler and am not sure where it was manufactured.

We can only speculate at this point. Any accusations would
be fully denied on their part anyway.
But here's a news flash, I saw only awhile ago, that there's
been an alert on L'real and Cover Girl lipsticks in red and wine or plum shades as having tiny amounts of lead in those
colors. Luckily I don't use red shades, but I have used both
brands. But there's absolutely no reason for lead to be in
lipsticks to begin with. It doesn't enhance the color any. So
there's an investigation going on now into those products.
I don't know where they are manufactured however. The
report didn't indicate that, or so I saw.
We read all food labels for frozen and other packaged
goods. We have found many products canned, processed
in Asian countries, and we've read that the fish used are
raised in tanks of contaminated water. So we are trying to
use American made products only. So check your shrimp
and maybe tuna cans as well. As we found cans of shrimp
from Indonesia. So better safe than sorry.

When I was a child, the joke was always, don't buy anything from Japan because it was cheap and broke easily. Fortunately, now a days we have very strict guidelines in making commodities whereas other countries are not at that level, this is also true for pollution. Third world countries, as well as others continue using products that we have banned for the protection of our consumers. I am not the least surprised about China. They pour more commodities into our country, just look at the clothing labels. I really try to find American made items, but because of the mighty dollar, companies are going to, again, countries that have poor, uneducated people that make next to nothing for turning out expensive product to sell to Americans.
I purchase items from Canada, U.K., most European made items, which end up costing more but are of good quality. Living back east, I shop for shoes that are made in Europe that are of superior quality, different, and very durable. As far as buying bargains, just remember, buyer beware!

Could what be propaganda- the warnings about the Chinese products? Are you suggesting that perhaps the warnings are false and just trying to smear Chinese companies? I doubt that- I think the motive is to keep people safe. Sure, money is an issue for consumers, but it's also why corporations went to China in the first place- they also save tons of money. It costs them much more to make stuff in the USA or Europe.
We do need to persue food from other countries to be safe from harm, but stores need to label what the country of origin is, so we can make informed choices.

I agree with Ray.....100% unadulterated greed.
Now whether it's sabatoge on purpose, ignorance or anything else.....who knows. I do my very level best NOT to buy things from foreign countries simply because there isn't "global rules" for this new "global economy". But it's been equally disheartning to discover we aren't much better. I know Europe and all were upset with our genitically engineered corn and banned our stuff for awhile. Seems in the quest for money....we've put the cart before the horse in so many situations.
I just know something is not right.....especially with our food.....sometimes I have a sinking feeling they're trying to kill off a percentage of people. This world can't continue like this for long.

I wish congress would take their own advice , the democratic leaders are calling for the head of the consumer protection agency to step down for not doing her job , seeing how congress is not doing theirs either I think they too should step down , and as far as toys go , it is simple , don't trust China , don't buy their junk , stay out of wal mart , ...You can thank Clinton for this one , he opened the gate for China and wal mart as to increase the stock he , and Hillary had , in Wal -Mart , he said as does Hillary , it was for my fellow Americans , thanks Bill , and Hillary ,we appreciate it , Most toys bought for kids , are bought because parents want toys for kids , the kids could actually care less , 60% of all learning toys are used until the batteries die , and within 3 months the kids lose interest anyway ..why waste the money . Kids got along fine without electronic toys , and before all this wide selection of toys kids were brought up better , and respected the parents ,and others and they were taught to use their imaginations , now we import that for them too ... Before rows and rows of toys we have today , kids did not pitch fits in stores crying I want it , mom counting to 20 saying "NO" then get the toy anyway , which has led kids to be more self centered ..we teach the kids to live in a world of excess and it is causing more trouble than ever before , we have kids killing parents for money , kids killing because things are not their way , we buy toys because a child professional who has no children says we should , by the way that pro , is a governement employee , and the government wants us to spend ,which is why the pro says to buy it , spend and not save is what they want , so they can provide housing , food , and medical care.

Mattel toys are not a bargain. I always expected quality from them. Until this mess I never realized that were outsourcing the manufacturing of the toys. It boiled down to the usual $$$.
I have purchased fruit from other countries in the past but try not to any longer.
I eat food friends and family born in other countries prepare but I do not purchase the food products myself.
I've tried to be more aware of clothes, shoes and housewares made in other countries and stick to US made.
But it is apparent I have not thouroughly researched my purchases.

the underlying motive is that the U.S. and Canada are trying to get people to start buying North America products so we can start bringing jobs back to both countrys! North America rocks! Losing your job yet, keep buying foreign.
