The first "President of the United States in Congress Assembled" (leader of the federal government under the Articles of Confederation) was Samuel Huntington.

The first "President of the United States" (Chief Executive of the Executive Branch under the US Constitution) was George Washington.

The first "American President" can also be taken to mean the first president to have been born an American, which would be the first president born after March 1, 1781 (the date of ratification of the Articles of Confederation). This would be John Tyler, born March 29, 1790, and president of the US from 1841 to 1845.
