Why do people put something (like a pencil) in their mouth when they are thinking?

It is called oral fixation. Usually these people were not breastfed by their mothers. You can spot these people because they are always putting something in their mouths or biting their finger nails. This happens in ages 0-2. You may have heard anal-retentive: this has to do with issues surrounding potty-training age 2-4. These people are really uptight. Sexually over-active sex-addicts and those who sleep around, etc. get this fixation around ages 4-6.

Everything can usually be blamed on poor child-rearing practices. If you have escaped all of these you are lucky.

Not everybody does this. But those who do this may be manifesting symptoms of oral fixation as explained by psychologists. This habit could be the result of some shortcomings of the person's caregiver when he was a child.. such as an abrupt termination of bottle or breast-feeding or overindulgence in them.

Or it can just be-- a little mannerism that means nothing. ;)
