What is the best way to go about gathering the sleeves and neckline of my peasant blouse that I made? So far it is a shirt that is about twice the size of my body (I did this so that I could gather the fabric along the top of the shirt.) Should I run a ribbon through it to gather it, and tie it in the back? This is for a pirate costume so it does not have to look perfect.

Thanks!

I would do exactly that - weave it through, if you can, that way you can pull it at the back to gather it, but by using a ribbon you can still at least untie it/ungather it if you wanted.. or adjust it according to preference.
I was a pirate last year :D

Ribbon or twill tape. Twill tape will hold a knot better.

If you want it to look like an old-fashioned shirt, it would tie in center front and you'd tuck the "laces" (ribbon or twill tape) into the bodice (i.e. cleavage). Having it tie in the back would look as though you'd dressed in a hurry ... hmmm ... might be a deliberate "feature" of characterization.

Neck and sleeves: the ribbon or tape should be longer than the fabric it will gather. Once it is in position (before gathering) *tack* the center of the ribbon or tape so it can't get lost or pull out completely. Accidents and mischief happen. The thread-tack makes for easy recovery.

Neck and sleeves, tuck the excess away. There's a *lot* of excess, but it's useful for adjustment and being able to release the gathers makes the garment launder more easily.

I would either gather a costume blouse like this by zigzagging to elastic, or a ribbon or drawstring in a casing. If you do that, it would be more authentic to put the string ends in front, where it becomes somewhat of a decoration and is adjustable by the wearer.

Easy! Thread needle with cotton same colour as shirt. Knot end. Starting on wrong side of shirt, do a couple of small stitches to hold work, then pierce shirt, put button over needle, (check whether other buttons are done in x shape or 11 shape) and copy. After a couple of goes through (not too tight) bring cotton up under button and twist round threads - then back through to back and another couple of small stitches to finish off!

Do a really loose stitch all the way around the garment in two rows while leaving 6 or more inches free at the ends. Pull on the thread and it will gather for you. If you don't understand, email me and I will try to do better.

You would make 2 rows of long stitches, size 5 on your sewing machine. Then pull the rows and the fabric will gather. Pin it to the smaller piece so that your gathers will fall evenly when you sew the pieces together.
