you know, those emails you get that are really poorly written from some dying person in Nigeria or someplace who is leaving 40 million dollars to you because their entire family has disowned them, and they're going to deposit all that money into YOUR bank account even though they've never met you before ....
and then they end up cleaning out your bank account instead.
does anyone actually BELIVE that crap?!

i haven't - though a friend fell for one that was very similar... i recognized the pattern, and told her not to do it, but...

it was a variation on the scam where they offer to send a money order, for "change" - IF you will deposit a large sum in their account, because they "can't TRANSFER the money directly (of course) and have no one to do this" for them...

seriously.

this friend was selling her bed set, and a guy called her saying that he would send her a money order OVER the amount, and (conveniently) his "friend/money manager, that HAPPENED to be traveling in the US to procure items for him, because he was still in Africa (hello, warning sign) would pick up the bed... IF she deposited the DIFFERENCE in a bank account, or something...

the money order LOOKED real, so she did it.

they got away with $2,000!! (and surprise: never came for the bed...)

unbelievable.

also, i experienced a variation on this scam when i was registering for classes at the local community college:

a day after i was in the financial aid office, i started getting phone calls from a pushy woman who wanted my bank account # so that she could "transfer" the funds into my account... (the NEXT DAY????)

i would ask her name, and she would yell at me - then i would threaten to hang up, and she would be honey sweet, still trying to get the digits.

to be truthful: i ALMOST fell for it, the first minute of the call, but couldn't find my check book with my account # - it was when she told me she was willing to wait 20 minutes ON THE LINE, for me to find it... that i got suspicious.

when i asked her to call me back - she asked, "what do you need: 5 min? 10 min?" she was way too eager, and when i asked her name again, she hung up.

I live outside the US. There was an article in the paper here about those scams, and how sadly a number of fools were duped... some companies here roasted as a result also.
