Do you need to push the button and then pull up the handbrake, thus not making that wrenching sound or do you crank up the notches?

.You can operate the hand brake either way.
But it is better for the car and it sounds far more professional if you push in the button to avoid the wrenching sound.

I love the wrenching sound but you can apply the parking brake either way.

either way - makes no difference as long as it is all the way up.

The button is for release.

less harmful to pull it up and do less of the cranking noise, they tend to break eventually if you just yank at em all the time
