Saw this spider in the North Island of New Zealand, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it?
It seemes to make a hissing noise when the picture was being taken.
Thanks

John R's answer sounds good,
however the picture (fantastic picture!) reminds me of a kind of funnelweb spider but I've never saw a red one.

It's a mygalomorph of some variety (the relatively primitive family that includes the tarantulas). Spiders that produce a 'hissing' noise may do so by rubbing their legs against some feature of the body - spines or a roughened surface. It's like a rattlesnake's rattles - a warning signal against further disturbance. Good photos!
