Hi Philip!

Madurai is one of the major cities in Tamil Nadu and home to the Meenakshi Temple. It is also known as the TEMPLE CITY of India. You can find temples in almost all the streets in madurai. It is also called "Thoongavoor", which means sleepless city..

Madurai, originally known as Madhurapuri got its name from the falling of divine nectar from Lord Shiva's rocks.

Madurai is also given the title of the Athens of the East because of the Bloody battle that took place on its soil and the war myths associated with it.

Meenakshi Temple
By far, the most common reason for visiting the city is the temple, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi (considered a form of Parvati) with a sanctum for her consort,

PLEASE NOTE: however, that non-Hindus are not permitted into the inner sancta of Meenakshi or Sundareshwarar; anyone who looks suspicious can and will be pulled out of line by attendants.

WARNING: Beware of guides who offer to take you to vantage points outside the temple to get a better view. You will be lured into shops that have a very hard sell..

Koodal Alagar Temple
Important Vaishnav Temple in the heart of the city, one of the Divya Desams ( 108) . Worshipped by "Alwars - Vasihnav Saints ". Worth to see and worship.

Thiruparnkundram
One of the important old Temple dedicated to Lord Muruga - Karthikeya. Carved on the hillock. Approximately 8 Kms from the city. First Arupadai Veedu

Alagar Temple
Another Vaishnav temple Alagar Koil, Famous for Chittrai - Summer Festivel, 20 kms away from the city.

Pazhamudhir Solai
Near to Alagar Koil, important Temple for Lord Karthikeya on the hills , of course inside of Solai - jungle. One of the six important temple for Lord Muruga - Karthikeya.

Mariamman Teppakkulam Tank, which is a large tank just 5 kms east of the temple of Meenakshi.few kilometres east of the old city, is the site for Teppam Festival (Float Festival) in the months of January and February

Thirumalai Nayak Mahal : In the whole of Madurai, The Thirumalai palace best describes the grand architectural style of the Nayakas. The palace of Tirumalai Nayak, one of the rulers of the Nayaks is situated at a distance of 1 km from the Sundeswara temple.

Annamalai and Nagamalai : The two rock formations, Annamalai and Nagamalai are home to the ascetics of the Jain and the Hindu religion. On the Caves at the rocky place that are difficult to access, there are inscriptions written on Tamil Brahmi inscriptions. The caves are chiselled out by the sages who go there for meditation as place for rest for reclusion days. For Booking Contact Us

Gandhi Museum
This museum, located on the north side of the river, houses Gandhi's bloodstained dhoti and little else by way of artifacts. Those interested in the freedom struggle, though, will be interested in the extensive text housed here.

HAV A NICE JOURNEY!
