The reason, at the end of the day, was that the refusal to allow women the vote became more and more untenable astime went by, It is often thus - that things one generation takes for granted become unacceptable to later ones. Slavery, laws discriminating against people on grounds of race, gender or gender orientation, capital punishment are just three things that come immediately to mind. But, yes, you are right that the First World War was a catalyst in this sea change in opinion. As more and more men were drafted to fight, women proved themselves to be quite capable of doing the jobs they had left behind and ones that were created because of the war - like manufacture of modern munitions and armaments. When the war was over the deep seated political objections to women having the vote just disappeared. Why not try searching 'women's work, World war I' etc.

It's also worth noting that although it was Britain wasn't the first to declare women's suffrage. Every country is influenced by the actions of other countries which they respect - when countries like New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Denmark, and Finland gave women the vote, it put some small degree of pressure on Britain. This may seem fairly minor, but you have to remember that it is just the tip of the iceberg - while these countries gave women the vote, many other countries were talking about giving women the vote; we can think of it in the sense of a general popular movement that Britain was a part of.

During WW1 with so many men in the forces and thousands dying women were required to do things that normally were previously done by men such as factory work. police, ambulance driving, farming and this helped their argument for getting the vote.
