Bob Dylan--not a band, but he writes some pretty great lyrics.
An actual band would be Pink Floyd. Roger Waters is great at lyrics.
The Who as well, with Pete Townshend. He was the genius behind Tommy and Quadrophenia, two great rock operas with great storylines.

i would say rise against, every song has a meaning about something that affects people in real life (no i dont mean this emo bollocks that so many people take seriously) check out the lyrics for songs like "voices off camera" and "Ready to fall"

Panic! at the Disco, the lyrics are profound and their songs aren't 'bout love, I mean love is the prettiest feeling but everyday we hear songs about the same topic: love. Panic! at the Disco is original and their lyrics are reallly difficult, you gotta be smart to understand 'em.
