Hi,

I have a new job in Sydney next year, and will be moving from Brisbane in January. It is my intention to find a place to share somewhere around the North Sydney area - Milson's Point looks particularly nice : ).

My question is: how competitive is the market for share housing? Will it be very hard to find a place to live? The main reason for asking is because I will need to come to Sydney several weeks in advance of starting work to find somewhere good, and would like to gauge how far in advance it might be necessary to come.

If it helps, here are some more specific details about the kind of place and sharemate that I'm looking for:

* Price range $200 - $300
* Male or female sharemate, 23-29 preferably
* Carpark not essential
* An apartment complex with a pool would be ideal

Additional detail:

* Intend to share with one other person
* Furniture in room not essential

Thanks for the link. I've actually seen that website and a fair few others before, what I'm trying to really get a sense of is the general level of competition. Are there usually a lot of people around looking for a place to live so that everything gets snapped up quickly?

Look in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday, http://www.smh.com.au in the classified ads under "share accommodation".

From my experience, most people looking for flatmates interview everyone who rings, I've done it myself. They then choose the one they want and offer the place. It is competitive, I've had a dozen people looking when I had a room for rent, but if you look at a few on a Saturday, you are almost certain to find a place to live that suits you. The people advertising want to find someone to share the rent as desperately as you want to find somewhere to live.
