If you mean the theoretical and some aspect of practical skills, the answer is doctors. However, every theory in medicine and nursing can not be put into practice nowadays as todays health care seek prompt answers from the "current evidence" than the mere texts. So, keeping up to date knowledge is one of the challenges that every health care practitioners face nowadays. I think, nurses in this matter are not good(...not every one) that could be due to various reasons.
However, nurses role nowadays is astonishing. The concept of holistic approach is more seen in nursing than the medicine. Doctors spot and treat the condition, a dietician may prescribe feeding regimn but, nurses integrate every care that is suitable for the individual patient.
Here, the finishing point of the care is very important which is soley co-ordinated by the nurse. So, nurses knows better about the patient and the services available to the patient and family. They(nurses) are very sensitive to their problems and needs too. There are many clinical skills are better performed by the nurses than the doctors.
I am sure, nurses might not bother much about their theoretical knowledge until they feel that these are going to be utilised while making decision for their patient care. Nursing in many areas stil lacking the "autonomy". There are areas stil led by the doctors and nurses are the passive listeners and carrying out what the prescription says.( more common in developing countries). Knowing more will only become a necessity when nurses given the opportunity to use their knowledge and skills under no one direction.

Well, being an ICU nurse, my answer may very well be biased, but...
Generally speaking, most doctors become set in their ways. They are taught the traditional type of medicine, so in many ways they have a tunnel vision and mind. Nurses use a more holistic approach. They do not see patients as diseased meat. They realize a patient's health depends on many factors. For example, continued stress can affect you physically, and let's say it causes you to have high blood pressure. Go to the doctor: here are a few blood pressure pills, all with side effects, of course. Go to a nurse (nurse practitioner): let's start by giving you something mild AND let's look at ways to decrease stress. If the high blood pressure is caused by the stress, giving just the pills would amount to a band-aid solution, right?
Yes, doctors go to medical schools for 4 years and then start their clinicals. Nurses like me go to university for 4 years and then start hands-on work under supervision. You can say that doctors have more "in depth" knowledge, but how well they use it is debatable. I found it very interesting and maddening when I realized that if a nurse administers the wrong dose or the wrong medication because the doctor made the mistake, it will not be the doctor or pharmacist who'll get in hot water, but the nurse. So, at least in this respect, yes, I do agree with people who say that all too often nurses are the unsung heroes.

Patients. They are the ones that have to tell the nurses and doctors what is wrong with them in the first place.

You are asking some silly questions tonight. Why do you have such an obssession with nurses? Obviously, it is doctors that know more about medicine, they go to more years of schooling.
