a percentage basically means a number out of 100... so 6% is 6 out of 100, i.e. 6 divided by 100 which equals 0.06.
rather than multipy 0.5 by 6 and then dividing the total by 100, some people find it easier to just calculate 0.5 by 0.06 as this has already taken care of the dividing by 100!
both ways work, which ever is easier for u

Percentages are laughably easy. It's incredible how many people seem to be confused by them.
A percentage is merely a fraction out of 100.
so 6% = 6/100 = 0.06
12% = 12/100 = 0.12
73% = 73/100 = 0.73.
100% = 100/100 = 1
spot the pattern? It's really not so hard.
So find a percentage of a number, in your case, you want 6% of 0.5, just multiply:
0.06 x 0.5 = 0.03.
So you were correct.

100% of something means ALL of whatever it is. ALL of something means the whole of it and that must equal 1.
So 100% = 1
So half of something is 50% or 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%
So 0.06 of something is 6/100 which = 0.06

It's cos (0.5/100)x6 is the same as 0.5x6/100
And that's the same as 0.5x(6/100)
And you know that 6/100=0.06.
So now you see that (0.5/100)x6 is the same as 0.5x0.06

n% is equivalent to n/100.
So here 6% is equal to 6/100 or 0.06.
That's why
= 6/100 * 0.5
= 3/100 or 0.03
The same result as when you do it your way of 0.06 * 0.5.

Well it looks like everyone has cleared this up for you. The only thing I would add is that I assume 0.5 is in kg. and the question asks for the answer to be given in grams so you should multiply it by 1000 to give 30g.
