an extremely horrible thing occurred yesterday. My girlfriend wanted to take her children at the zoo and i reluctantly agreed While visiting the tiger habitat, my girlfriend found the tiger to be very cute looking and beautiful. There was a thin fence, and i have no idea why but she inserted her hand to pat the tiger's head. Just as she rubbed her hand on the tiger's nose -- the next thing -- she has no hand! The tiger bit her on the hand with such tremendous force, that the entire hand got detached and he was literally walking away with her entire hand in its mouth and then to the horror of everyone, starts eating and chewing that bloodied hand. Showers of blood came out of her wrists and everyone screamed. Soon she fainted, and was taken to some hospital by zoo people. We are in a third word country, and the zoo officials say its my girlfriend's fault for touching tiger's face. But isn't it zoo's responsibility to tame and domesticate the tiger? gf is 28. shouldn't zoo pay 4 medical?

Working at a zoo I am going to mainly keep my mouth shut about this one. Why? Because stupid people like your girlfriend really piss me off and cause problems for the zoo community. If it was a child then I could understand the accident a bit more, but at 28 years old your girl was more than old enough to know better. Not to mention what type of lesson does that teach her kids?

I do have this to say about your "isnt it a zoos responsibility to tame and domesticate" the animals. NO. Not only is it not their job to do that, it is something that CANNOT be done. Just because an animal is in a zoo and has daily interaction with humans does not even remotely make them tame. They are "wild" animals for a reason.

Depending on zoo policy and the area you live in they might be a bit responsible but when push comes to shove it is your gf fault and she should be responsible for her own bills.

I am sorry that it happened, but come on, when people are that stupid bad things happen.

That's terrible what happened to your girlfriend, but that fence is there for a reason. Wild animals are just that: WILD. They can't be completely 100% tamed, even if raised by humans.

Here in the U.S., there are two people, Sigfried & Roy, who put on a show with rare white tigers in Las Vegas. They have hand-raised those animals from birth. A couple years ago, one of the adult tigers mauled one of the guys and almost killed him. People can't supress animal instinct. So, no the zoo isn't responsible for your girlfriend's very bad judgment.

None of the animals at the zoo or tame or domesticated - that's a fallacy. All wild animals are just that - wild. They are dangerous and can be deadly and obviously should be treated with respect. that means you don't tap the cute little kitty on the nose. Obviously the zoo has a responsibility to warn people and to reasonably house animals, however, it's not their obligation to do everything to ensure that people don't do something stupid. There are reports of people who occasionally decide that they should pet or enter the exhibit of a large carnivore and normally they are eaten. I'd guess that your girlfriend got off easy.

Oh my God.
I pity your girlfriend, dude.
But you know, even a tame tiger cannot be touched coz it wouldn't like it. Its a normal reaction for the tiger to eat her hand.
Of course, the zoo won't pay 4 the medical. Sorry to say..

Tiger is not a tame animal and CANNOT be domesticated.

If this really happened..which I highly doubt..the zoo is not responsible for taming wild animals! Animals in zoos are all wild..they are not pets. I also highly doubt that any zoo would have an enclousure where a visitor would even be able to touch one of the wild animals. If so, then it is your girlfriends fault for touching it. They will now have to destroy the tiger.
