The service is just a clean and test. If the new board is now faulty , then you could claim under the guarantee for the part only (unless the guarantee included labour), but the engineer did not guarantee the rest of the boiler, If you need some type of guarantee for the whole boiler, then you need to take out an insurance policy, British Gas do an insurance, but it will cost you more in the long with an insurance policy.
They are a rib off, People buy cheep nasty boilers that always brake down and then spend hundreds on an insurance policy for the repair ! Far better to buy a good boiler like a Valliant that cost a little more and not have any faults.

He replaced the control board and that is guaranteed by the manufacturers of the board, if it is faulty they will replace it, your engineer will have to get a new board, then send the other back to be tested, then he will be refunded if it is faulty. The service guarantees the boiler is safe, not that it won't break down (though it is less likely to). To clarify, if you took your car for new tyres and they said they guaranteed 12 months, if the exhaust fell off the day after, do you think they would replace it free? To add to comments made after mine, Vaillant are a good boiler, Worcester Bosch are equally as good, Vaillant did have recalls last year. British gas are not the only company who do insurance (if you get the right insurance, it is worth it, regardless of boiler), look around, British gas have the financial clout to beat anybody on price, but they choose not to! The company I work for do breakdown insurance, in my opinion it is better, with more cover, better visit time, cheaper and more honest, it is definately worth looking around.

I don't know the laws of your country but, assuming they're about the same here. he's guaranteeing the work he did, nothing more.
He can't guarantee something he doesn't know, IE: something that happened that wasn't his fault. He can come back and, look at it, hope he's honest and will admit to something he missed, something that happen after he left, etc. This is a hard call.
