No, it has been lumped in with highly addictive narcotics as part of the war on drugs. It is no worse for one's health than alchohol or nicoteine, and maybe even caffeine.

Interesting topic for a research paper!

I know many people who use cannabis. I think the media are under such pressure to show cannabis as the first step to becoming a junkie that they are afraid to show it as the recreational now and again drug that it is for most users. Atitudes have shifted in the uk a little but there is a generation of people who will never accept that it doesnt have to lead to heroin use. I feel its quite sad if only because its one of the few drugs (drink included) that doesnt seem to make people angry, doesnt cause people to go destroying property etc.

It's not as bad as some people make it out to be, but it still shouldn't be legalized. I've smoked pot many a time, and I've known many people you could label as stoners, it has to many negative side affects for certain people. I've seen people completely freak out after smoking marijuana, It was almost like they were having a bad trip on acid. It's not a safe drug.

It’s not the comparison but the effect in the long term that counts. Petrol sniffing for example is most likely worse but the comparison isn't the issue.

The issue is the effect on society from the use of any of these types of products.
Everyone pays in one way or another for the abuse that people do to themselves. And if society can reduce that burden on society then that's the goal to head for in the long term.
