Well yes and no. In America the national language is English because the majority of Americans only speak that. But with immigration and the multitude of cultures we have here, a lot of people know more than just English. Spanish in the southern states especially has almost become a second language or a highly recommended language to learn because of the majority of people who speak it.
Most public schools offer languages too as well colleges and universities. Spanish, French, German, and Latin are the four major courses offered but I've heard of Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, and even A.S.L. (American Sign Language) as choices to study. And not to mention certain religions give people the opportunity to grow up learning another language.
But over all the main language is English.

I'm sure the native Indians used to speak their own language, but since it was the English that invaded America that the offical language. Spanish is also widely spoken as there is lots of Mexicans immigrants and this is their primary language.

Here is my favorite joke:
What do you call a person who speaks two langages?
Bi-lingual.
What do you call a person who speaks three languages?
Tri-lingual.
What do you call a person who speaks one language?
American!
Americans do not emphasize foreign language education - it is usually not taught until high school - and frankly, the majority of Americans will never travel outside of their country or have any need for another language than English.

America was a British colony, but unlike India America did not have a big resident population of their own and after the independence lot of immegrants from different countries went to Ametica and populated it. Still the major population was British. Hence the language for communication became English.

Pretty much, unless their parents are from a country where another language is spoken. The common language, despite a population of 300 million, is one the country's strengths and unifying characteristics. They generally study another language in school, but rarely become proficient at it, as there is little use for it in day-to-day life, unless they go to live for a time where that language is the principle tongue.

No, there is no truth to that statement. Unless you define Americans as those who can only speak English.
