The term gross in this usage means obvious, large or profuse.

A gross pollutant is a large portion or contributor to the total contamination.

Storm water drains will have a gross polutant trap(GPT) to collect material washed into the drains before the water is discharged into a wetland area. This can be a simple bar screen which collects liter or a tank like trap structure which allows oil and sediment to seperate out.

Pollution is the introduction of pollutants (whether chemical substances, or energy such as noise, heat, or light) into the environment which result in deleterious effects of such a nature as to endanger human health, harm living resources and ecosystems, and impair or interfere with amenities and other legitimate uses of the environment. (From Web Search),

Human beings are the "gross pollutant" who run the factories using carbon-oriented fuel, because the factories are just soul-less pieces of engineering.
