I am in advertising and I know that the reason for non-promotion of our country is BUDGET.
When Thailand ran its Amazing Thailand campaign, surely the ad budget more than paid for itself in terms of tourism- related revenues. All other countries, including Malaysia, India, Singapore, HongKong etc promote themselves.
Our promotions/advertising are few, and comes once in a blue moon. We have great advertising materials that see exposure only in very few markets, and run fro a very limited time. The net effect is like there is nothing at all.
We need to have people in government who will understand that spending for advertising the Philippines as a tourism destination is not EXPENSE, but INVESTMENT. Unfortunately, the heads of the Tourism office (past and present) were/are politicians. not technocrats who can think that tourism is going to be a major source of income when treated like it were a business.

Corregidor? Oh my Gosh Fizz that is not even a pinch of what the Philippines has to offer. You are right on a lot of things but not on the sights. The Philippines would be more attractive if it were easy to travel from one place to another especially to tourist spots. Yah, the airport sucks. Think of it as a mountain. It's always worth the climb once you reach the peak. Some fantastic places to go to are the Banaue Rice Terraces, Sagada (one of the best caves based on lonely planet!), Palawan (from there you can go to Tubataha Reef, one of the best places to dive) and tons more! A lot of tourists go to the Philippines for diving. Yes, people would spend a lot (airfare) to dive in the Philippines because it is too beautiful to miss. People should go around the Philippines first before criticizing. Please don't expect much things to see in Metro Manila, seriously. Or places near it like Corregidor and Tagaytay. You really have to take a long ride from Manila to see the untouched wonders it has to offer. One of the biggest reasons why tourists don't go the Philippines is because of the high crime rate. I doubt if this will change soon but never the less, still beautiful!

We have to get our acts together. Sadly, there is a lot of crab mentality and backbiting going on. Yes its a very wonderful country to visit- even less expensive as compared to its Asian counterparts. We Filipinos would rather go abroad than visit provinces here- love for the country and for our culture is lacking. Mainly because we have been colonized by too many western nations including the US and Spain- we do not inherently love our heritage. Sad but true. Everyone wants to go out of the country, study out of the country, work out of the country and leave the misery of economic turmoil. We have to start somewhere. But do not let the negative things deter you from visiting the Philippines (again). Word of mouth is a very powerful tool. I have been around the Philippines and have done many travels abroad as well. We have a lot to boast about: white sand and black sand beaches, coconut trees, rejuvenating and indigenous spas, hospitable and friendly people, you will not have difficulty in being understood in English, etc. Mabuhay! I hope to see the Philippines as a wholesome travel and wellness destination someday.

It's true, the government is not doing enough to promote the Philippines as major tourist attraction. Most probably, the budget for the promotion is being pocketed by those who run the tourism department.
I hope we can get the government to really look into promoting the country. More tourist coming, more revenue for the government, more employment opportunity and better life for the people.

The transportation system and Pollution in the City of Manila are the first two major issues that faces tourists followed by safety. Unless they are addressed and solved and an aggressive ad campaign is in the works, then it will be hard to attract as much tourists to make it one of the first choices to travel.
The US Department of homeland security have the Philippines on its website cautioning people when traveling there. The Government of the Philippines must work hard on taking that out and the minute they do, people from America will come.

It is trying to, but not quite successfully.
I hate bitching and moaning about the government but if you have a country that is as beautiful as ours, with a weather that is fantastic almost year-round, a culture that is an interesting mix of the east and the west, etc, etc... it is hard to explain why tourists don't flock here.
Some people say it is because of the over-protected airline industry. Others claim it is lack of promotion. Whatever it is, the government is not doing it right. And what then should we do? Let's all promote the Philippines ourselves! And yes, non-Filipinos like you can help us a lot in that regards. Please spread the word about this country which the Lonely Planet says is one of the most underestimated tourist destinations in the world.

Thanks Carl! thats my question too. Sometimes, I wonder why is Thailand more famous than the Philippines? This is not to ***** about my asian brothers, im just wondering.. of course I could be biased.
corruption is the root. the budget for tourism gets to be so small, maybe even those in the tourism, are corrupt we dont know but budget doesnt seem to fit.
that is why smart telecommunications teamed up with our department of tourism.
