ciggarettes have been proven to cause all sorts of health problems yet we can buy them freely with out fear of being charged- does this have anything to do with the billions of dollars our government makes from them i think so.
marijuana whilst in certain people who are sensitive(an exteremly low percentage of people) to thc can cause some health problems but is no where near as deadly as ciggarettes. I belive the only reason that marijuana is illeagal is because the government can not possibly stop people growing it themselves and are therefore unable to profit from making it legal

The only drug besides alcohol should be weed and made legal! I know cocaine can cause immediate heart damage and constricting blood vessels, causing heart failure Its proven!! Heroine is so addicting that 90% of first time users become addicted and can die from withdrawls!! So out of my 4 major drugs, alcohol and pot are the least invasive. But pot is less harmful than alcohol!! Look at the statistics!!Drunk accidents, rage beatings, missed time at work, etc.. The only problem with weed is its psychoactive and leaves chronic users feeling short term memory loss and bad judgement at tasks involving concentration!! In short, no drugs good, all have reprecussions!! So if your a self made millionare and dont have to work, stay home and smoke weed, have sex and enjoy.. As for the rest of us, alcohol works well on a friday night to ease the tensions of the week!! Just dont overdo it and find a designated driver, or call a taxi if your Muffed up!!

Mostly it is a coincidence of history. It would undoubtedly have become illegal if it didn't have so many people using it. It also happened to be a vice of the upper classes. So both the lawmakers and the people were in favor of it for the longest time. Now that there is more knowledge of it's harmful effects it is too late to change because of the tobacco industries powerful lobbies and the fact that it's a personal choice. Historically a well established drug in a culture is almost impossible to remove, take a look at prohibition in US history. If you're argueing for marijuana however you're not going to win because there just aren't enough users. This country is still a democracy and all it would take is an incredibly wealthy lobby and a massive grassroots campaign..... yup that's all it would take.....

i think your right! The reason its illeagal is because they cant tax it!!! and you see the commercials about a teenager getting in a car wreck and the had it in there system, but how can they tell if they were on it right then!!! The government is ran by old people and think that its as bad as crack! also if they started to sell it and tax it, wouldnt the crime rate go down alittle? and maybe the unemployment rate would go down because the dealers need another way to make money! And the government would save money by going after the real criminals, like murderers instead of going after some plant!

Because a majority of Americans want cigarettes legal and marijuana illegal.

We have a democratic system. If more people had the opposite view, then tobacco would be illegal and marijuana would be legal.

And under your theory, anyone could grow their own tobacco right now, preventing the government from getting the taxes... hasn't happened.

Finish your bag of Doritos.

honey the government profits over it being illegal regardless. drug dealer when caught get charged with tax evasion. when the government freezes their assets they profit over that as well. the reason it is not legal is because it is a classified drug. once a drug is classified a controlled substance they can not change it. yes it would be nice though. yes marijuana does also cause health problems. you are inhaling it into your lungs as well and unless you know the grower it can be treated with chemicals as well. it can cause breathing problems, kills brain cells, lowers sperm rate. there are side affects. i suggest a book called "keep off the grass" for a little educational reading on the drug. oh and no it is not a gateway drug for anybody else out there reading this! that is false

People can grow tobacco just a easily as they can marijuana.

Marijuana is a mind altering drug. It can't kill you by giving you cancer but lets say you go smoke some pot and get behind the wheel of a car, theres a chance that you could get in an accident. Keep in mind that once again its a mind altering drug. You cant go off and smoke pot like you woud ciggarettes.

Tobacco is legal because its been around in mass use and production since before America was founded. It actually played an integral role in the existence of the country.

Marujuana has severe negative effects too... you seem to gloss over those.

Yeah, cigarettes are deadly, but alcohol can be too. And they don't know yet all the effects of weed yet either. I get your point though.
